Competition Documentaries, Latvia 2005, 50 Min.
Rural life on the fringes of New Europe is focus of this cinematic portrait by Latvian director Ivars Zviedris. He found his main characters near the Estonian border. One of them is Eriks Balgalus, born in 1937, a former seaman who once sailed the oceans of the world. Now he lives in a container that used to be part of a truck. He has neither running water nor electricity. Eriks knows that no woman would ever move in here, but he does not want to live in the city. Here he has his friends and drinking companions with whom he can talk about everything, including women and membership of the European Union, which offers little hope to any of these men.
