The Nordische Filmtage Lübeck introduces new prize for international short films

With a new endowment for a prize for best Nordic or Baltic short film from the NFL sections Nordic Shorts and Children’s and Youth Films, the number of festival awards now totals twelve. In addition to the Cinestar Prize for best German short in the Filmforum section, international short films will now also be up for an award.

“This acknowledges our appreciation for the short film form. Shorts are an indispensable part of movie culture and raise the profile of the festival considerably”, says Sebastian Apel, curator of the Nordic Shorts section.

The upcoming festival will showcase 50 short films in nine compilations, including narratives, documentaries, animated films, experimental films, and first-time directors. But also on view will be shorts by well-known filmmakers, such as “Nest”, the newest film from celebrated Icelandic director Hlynur Palmasson, who won the NDR Film Prize at the 2019 NFL for his narrative feature “A White, White Day”. Young audiences will be treated to the short films in the Children’s and Youth section, often the target group’s first ever visit to the cinema.

The prize is endowed with € 5,000, provided by Lübeck insurance company Teschke & Collegen Versicherungsmakler GmbH, which is stepping up as a premium festival sponsor for the first time this year.

“It is a wonderful example of civic involvement”, said Susanne Kasimir, managing director of the Nordische Filmtage Lübeck, “Especially in difficult economic times, we are very appreciative of the support from all sides in Lübeck and the region”.

A three-person jury will award the new prize, with members to be announced at the programme press conference on October 12 in Lübeck’s Haus der Kaufmannschaft (Mercantile building).
