Opening Night of the 64th Nordische Filmtage Lübeck

For its 64th run, the Nordische Filmtage Lübeck this evening celebrated opening night in the largest theatre of the Cinestar Stadthalle multiplex cinema. The festival showcasing Nordic and Baltic films opened with the German premiere of the Danish documentary “Music for Black Pigeons” directed by Jørgen Leth and Andreas Koefoed, who are on hand in Lübeck alongside the film’s protagonist, musician Jakob Bro, and its producer, Emile Hertling Péronard.

Before the opening screening, Icelandic director Friðrik Þór Friðriksson was onstage to accept this year’s honorary award. This year’s Homage is dedicated to the internationally renowned filmmaker.

The honouree was introduced by film producer Alexander Bohr. In his speech, he emphasised Friðriksson’s decidedly Icelandic way of storytelling, saying “your visually stunning films are imbued with an oddly mystical aura. They are bizarre, witty, poetic, surreal, and curiously evocative. They make us privy to the magical world of Icelandic sagas. All Icelanders believe in preternatural phenomena. And as the films unfold, we the audience accept as a matter of course the sudden appearance of elves, trolls, and ghosts.”

More than 173 films will be shown in 212 public screenings at Lübeck venues during the Nordische Filmtage. And more than 70% of that line-up will be available for streaming by audiences all over Germany.
