OF HORSES AND MEN: The opening film at the 55. Nordic Film Days Lübeck 2013 features (Iceland) horses

Lübeck, 26. September 2013 – The 55. Nordic Film Days Lübeck begin on 30. October 2013. This year’s opening film is the Icelandic-German co-production “Of Horses And Men” (Hross í oss), the feature film debut by Benedikt Erlingsson, one of Iceland’s most famous actors and theatre directors. It provides a humorous and dramatic presentation of the unique relationship between humans and (Iceland) horses. Happiness and unhappiness, love and death are close at hand when humans and animals experience each other’s fate in a number of interlinked tales.

“Of Horses And Men” was announced as Iceland’s Oscar contestant earlier this week. The film boasts an immensely powerful cast, including the multiple award-winning Icelandic actor Ingvar E. Sigurðsson (Jar City, Cold Light, Angels of the Universe) and the Danish actress Charlotte Bøving. Set in Iceland’s amazing countryside, short dialogues and finely nuanced details develop into a fascinating microcosm that is mirrored in the eyes of horses and men and encaptivates its audience (camera: Bergsteinn Björgúlfsson, Reykjavik-Rotterdam, The Deep). The film’s exceptional atmosphere is further underlined by an impressive soundtrack featuring choirs and rhythmic instrumentals.

The romantic-dramatic country comedy was produced by Iceland’s directing legend Fridrik Thór Fridriksson (Oscar nomination for Children of Nature) and the production company Hrossabrestur. The German co-production partner is Christoph Thoke of Mogador Film.

“Benedikt Erlingsson and I have Lars von Trier to thank for our cooperation,” says producer Fridrik Thór Fridriksen, “because when we met on the set of “The Boss Of It All”, Benedikt showed me his script for “Of Horses And Men”.” “It’s great that such a small country produces so many great stories - and Fridrik Thór Fridriksen is in a class of his own. I have rarely had as much fun in my work as co-producer,” says Christoph Thoke, ““Of Horses and Men” is  definitely not just for horse lovers.”

“This film will bring a tear to every eye, because laughing and crying lie inseparably close here,” says Linde Fröhlich, Artistic Director at NFL. “’Of Horses And Men’ is a human-animal tragicomedy in which the rough, Icelandic country plays a central role. It makes us very happy to be able to open the 55. Nordic Film Days Lübeck with this extraordinary film.”

The opening is to be attended by the director, cast and producer.

The programme and first guests of this year’s festival edition will be announced at the programme press conference on 8. October 2013 in Lübeck. Accreditation has started via the festival’s website. Please also find further information at www.filmtage.luebeck.de and www.facebook.com/nordicfilmdays
