Ein Porträt von Dänemarks gefeiertem und kontrovers diskutiertem Regisseur Lars von Trier, der so erfolgreiche Filme wie "Breaking the Waves" und "Das Reich" drehte. Eine Begegnung mit von Trier auf ganz privater Ebene, aber auch in seiner Filmwelt. Lars von Trier ist ein Mann der Widersprüche. Er scheut den Medienkontakt. Stig Björkman hatte Gelegenheit, Lars von Trier zwei Jahre lang mit der Kamera zu begleiten. In Gesprächen äußert sich der Regisseur über seine Ängste und seinen Selbsthaß, über seine Ideale und woran er glaubt. Gezeigt werden auch Aufnahmen von dem jungen von Trier, wie er als zehnjähriger Junge mit der Super-8-Kamera seiner Mutter erste Filmversuche unternimmt.

A portrait of Denmarkís most acclaimed and controversial director, Lars von Trier, author of such successful works as "Breaking the Waves" and "The Kingdom". The film encounters von Trier, a man of contradictions, on a private level as well as in his film world. Withdrawn and enigmatic, he has refused contact with press and media. Stig Björkman had the rare opportunity to follow von Trier during a period of more than two years and to meet him at work, at home and at leisure. The filmmaker talks about his phobias, fears and self-hatred, but also about his ideals and beliefs. We also see young Lars making his first experiments in film at the age of ten with his motherís Super-8 camera.

Regisseur Stig Björkman ist Filmemacher und -kritiker für verschiedenesiedene schwedische und internationale Magazine. Er hat bei einer großen Anzahl von Spiel- und Dokumentarfilmen Regie geführt, darunter bei "Ich bin neugierig - Film", einem Streifzug durch die skandinavische Filmgeschichtete, der 1995 bei den Nordischen Filmtagen zu sehen war. Björkman hat auch Bücher über Ingmar Bergman und Woody Allen geschrieben.

Director Stig Björkman is a filmmaker as well as a critic for several Swedish and international magazines. He has directed a great number of feature films and documentaries, including "I am Curious - Film", a foray through Swedish film history, which was shown at the Nordic Film Days in 1995. Björkman has also published books on Ingmar Bergman and Woody Allen.
