Inhalt/ Summary

Maja ist zwanzig und weiß nicht wohin: Ihr Freund Olle ist nach Indien abgehauen, die gemeinsame Wohnung gekündigt. Schließlich zieht Maja in das winzige Stockholmer Apartment von Mattias, wo viele seiner Freunde täglich vorbeischauen und abhängen. Mattias’ bisexueller Kumpel Pållan beginnt, mit Mattias zu flirten, doch auch Maja verliebt sich in ihn. Wenn da nicht der Gedanke wäre, dass Olle aus Indien zurückkommen und sich als perfekter Partner entpuppen könnte. Ein Film über die Verwirrungen des frühen Erwachsenendaseins, über die Suche nach dem eigenen Glück und über die Großstadt Stockholm. „Die Babylon-Krankheit“ transportiert seine Thematik ungeheuer authentisch, was sicher an seinen Produktionsumständen liegt: Von Regie über Drehbuch, Kamera und Schnitt bis zu den Schauspielern war der Film für nahezu alle Beteiligten das Debüt, keiner von ihnen ist älter als Mitte zwanzig. Das merkt man dem Film an: Er ist nah dran an der schwedischen Jugendkultur und wirkt durch seine Ehrlichkeit wie ein frischer Wind im Kino.

Maja is twenty – so what now? Her friend Olle is off to India. They’ve given up the flat they shared. Maja moves in with Mattias, whose friends like to drop in and hang out. Mattias’ bisexual friend Pållan flirts with Mattias, but Maja fancies him too. If it weren’t for the fact that Olle might soon be back from India, Pållan might just be the perfect partner. A film about the vagaries of post-adolescence, the quest for personal happiness and city life in Stockholm. “The Babylon Disease” draws its remarkable authenticity from the fact that virtually everyone involved, from director to screenwriter, cameraman, cutter and cast, is making their film debut here. All are under 25. It certainly makes its mark on the film, which truly has its finger on the pulse of Swedish youth culture. This film brings a breath of honest fresh air to the world of cinema.

Regisseur Daniel Espinosa wuchs im Immigrantenmilieu einer Stockholmer Vorstadt auf. Im Jahr 2003 machte er seinen Abschluss an der Dänischen Filmschule und drehte im selben Jahr sein Debüt „The Fighter“. „Die Babylon-Krankheit“ ist sein erster Spielfilm.

Director Daniel Espinosa grew up in the immigrant milieu of a Stockholm suburb. In 2003 he graduated from the Danish Film School and made his debut film “The Fighter”. “The Babylon Disease” is his first feature film.
