Inhalt/ Summary

Nach einem Selbstmordversuch wird der 17-jährige Sami in ein Heim der Jugendpsychiatrie gebracht. Seinen verbundenen Arm trägt er in der Schlinge, sein Gesicht versteckt er hinter langem Haar. Über das, was passiert ist, will er nicht sprechen. Überhaupt ist Sami eher ein Stiller – wenn er nicht gerade einen Rappel kriegt und man ihn ans Bett fesseln muss. Und doch gelingt es dem engagierten Betreuer Taneli, dass der Junge sich allmählich öffnet. Seine Eltern sind geschieden, der Vater lebt in Schweden. Die Mutter, leicht exaltiert und neurotisch, wirkt überbesorgt. Sie will, dass Sami zu ihr zurückkommt. Doch zur Überraschung aller bleibt Sami lieber im Heim – bis er den geheimen Grund für seine Verzweiflungstat am Ende doch noch offenbart. Mit einer virtuos geführten Handkamera zeichnet Regisseur Petri Kotwica das Porträt eines Jugendlichen, der in der Familie keinen Halt finden kann. Mit seinen ausgeblichenen Farben und einem Soundtrack aus finnischem HipHop und Hardrock ist „Homesick“ über die ergreifende Charakterzeichnung hinaus auch ein audio-visuell beeindruckendes Erlebnis.

Following a suicide attempt, 17-year-old Sami has been placed in a young people’s psychiatric home. His arm in a sling, his face hidden by his long hair, he refuses to speak about what has happened. For the most part, Sami is a quiet lad, but occasionally he has outbursts so extreme that the staff tie him to his bed. However, one carer, Taneli, gradually manages to get him to open up. Sami’s parents are divorced, his father lives in Sweden. His somewhat neurotic and over-protective mother wants Sami to come back to her. But to everyone’s surprise, Sami would rather stay in the psychiatric home – until he finally reveals the secret reason for his act of desperation. With virtuoso camerawork, director Petri Kotwica sketches the portrait of a young man who can find no stability within the family. In faded colours and with a soundtrack of Finnish hip-hop and hard rock, “Homesick” is not only a moving portrait of a troubled youth but also an audio-visual feast.

Petri Kotwica, Jahrgang 1965, hat an der Kunsthochschule in Helsinki Film mit der Fachrichtung Regie und Drehbuch studiert. Nach mehreren Kurzfilmen ist „Homesick“ sein Spielfilmdebüt. Zurzeit arbeitet er bereits an seinem nächsten Film, Arbeitstitel: „Black Ice“.

Petri Kotwica, born in 1965, studied directing and screenwriting at Helsinki Art School. Following several short films, “Homesick” is his feature film debut. He is already working on his next film with the working title “Black Ice”.
