Inhalt/ Summary

Die Schule im Osloer Stadtteil Hauketo ist eine Schule mit einem hohen Anteil an Immigrantenkindern. Als Margreth Olin hier ihren Film über eine 10. Klasse dreht, lässt Präsident Bush den Irak bombardieren. Die Integration der muslimischen Schüler in den Klassenverband macht dies nicht gerade leichter. Tätlichkeiten auf dem Schulhof stehen am Anfang dieser Langzeitbeobachtung. Aggressionen und gegenseitiges Unverständnis bestimmen den Alltag bis zu den Abschlussprüfungen. Und trotzdem stellen sich beim Kinozuschauer bald auch Sympathien ein: für die vielfach verunsicherten Schüler, für die häufig überforderten Lehrer. In einer unfriedlichen Welt kann die Schule nun mal kein Idyll und die Jugend nicht das Paradies auf Erden sein. Aber der Klassenraum, so Margreth Olin, ist die wahre UN. Entstanden ist ihr Film nach den strengen Dogma-Regeln, die Lars von Trier 2001 für Dokumentarfilme formuliert hat. Dementsprechend gibt es weder Kunstlicht noch Musik, und jeder Schnitt ist durch ein Stück Schwarzfilm markiert. „Raw Youth“ will keinen Schönheitspreis gewinnen. „Raw Youth“ ist allein der Wahrhaftigkeit verpflichtet.

The school in Oslo’s Hauketo district has a high percentage of immigrant children. When Margreth Olin was making her film about a class of pupils there, President Bush was bombing Iraq. Which didn’t exactly promote the integration of the Moslem pupils in the class. Playground aggression is just the start in this long-term observation of the mutual lack of understanding that pervades everyday life, culminating in the final exams. Nevertheless, viewers soon find themselves empathising with the pupils, many of whom feel insecure, as well as with the teachers, who are often out of their depth. In a world without peace, school cannot be a blissful idyll, and it certainly can’t be said that to be young is heaven on earth. But the classroom itself, according to Margreth Olin, is the real UN. Her film was made strictly according to the tenets of Dogma formulated by Lars Trier in 2001 for documentaries. So there is neither artificial light nor music, and each cut is marked by a strip of black film. “Raw Youth” is not aiming to win any prizes for beauty. “Raw Youth” is devoted solely to truth.

Regisseurin Margreth Olin wurde 1970 im norwegischen Strada geboren. Sie besuchte 1993-94 das College in Volda und studierte anschließend Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschaften in Bergen und Oslo. 1995 realisierte sie als Studienabschlussarbeit ihren ersten kurzen Dokumentarfilm. Seither hat sie mit dem Kurzspielfilm „Gluttony“ einen Beitrag zur Kurzfilmserie „De 7 Dødsynder“ (Die sieben Todsünden) und mehrere preisgekrönte Dokumentationen gedreht. Mit ihrem Film „Helfende Hände“ (Dej mjuke hendane), der das Leben in einem norwegischen Altersheim zeigt, war sie 1998 bei den Nordischen Filmtagen Lübeck vertreten. „Raw Youth“ entstand als Co-Produktion mit Zentropa Real.

Director Margreth Olin was born in 1970 in Strada, Norway. She attended college in Volda from 1993-94 and then studied media and communication in Bergen and Oslo. She made her first short documentary in 1995 as her graduation piece. Since then she has made the short feature film “Gluttony” as part of the short film series “De 7 Dødsynder” (The Seven Deadly Sins) and several award-winning documentaries. Her film “Helping Hands” (Dej mjuke hendane), about life in a Norwegian care home for the elderly, was screened at the 1998 Nordic Film Days Lübeck. “Raw Youth” was made as a co-production with Zentropa Real.
