Die Geschichte – und vielleicht die Zukunft – einer ehemaligen Kolchose führt der aus Österreich stammende Regisseur Sepp R. Brudermann vor Augen. Entstanden ist sein Film in Zubiskes, 80 Kilometer von Vilnius entfernt, wo 1958 die „Leuchtturm“-Kolchose gegründet wurde. Romas Markevicius, ein musisch interessierter Architekt und Mitbegründer der landwirtschaftlichen Produktionsgenossenschaft, stellte hier nicht nur einen Chor und ein Orchester auf die Beine – er filmte mit seiner 16mm-Kamera auch das Alltagsleben. Diese Bilder kombiniert Sepp R. Brudermann mit Interviews der verbliebenen Bewohner. Wo früher allein 300 Kinder zur Schule gingen, leben heute nur noch insgesamt 200 Menschen. Die jungen Leute sind längst in die Stadt gezogen. Die Viehherden gibt es nicht mehr; die meisten hier besitzen gerade mal eine Kuh, eine Ziege und ein paar Hühner. Auf den Einzug der Marktwirtschaft reagieren sie auf unterschiedliche Weise, und nicht alle ganz ohne Erfolg. So werden beispielsweise Badeseen angelegt, die demnächst Touristen in die alte Kolchose locken sollen.

Austrian-born director Sepp R. Brudermann charts the history – and perhaps the future, too – of a former kolkhoz (a Soviet collective farm). His film was made in Zubiskes, 80 kilometres from Vilnius, where the “Lighthouse” kolkhoz was founded in 1958. Romas Markevicius, a creatively inclined architect and co-founder of the agricultural production collective, not only built up a choir and orchestra here, but also documented everyday life using a 16mm camera. Sepp R. Brudermann uses this original footage alongside interviews with the remaining inhabitants. Where there was once a school with 300 pupils, the entire population now counts only 200. The young people have moved to the city. There are no longer herds of livestock; most people, if at all, have a cow, a goat and a few hens. They have responded in different ways to the advent of the free market economy, some of with a degree of success. For instance, bathing lakes are being created in a bid to attract tourists to the former kolkhoz.

Regisseur Sepp R. Brudermann, geboren 1975 in Wien, studierte Grafik und freie Kunst an der Kunsthochschule in Wien von 1994-2000. Er absolvierte dann seinen Zivildienst im Jüdischen Museum von Vilnius, wo 2001 in Co-Regie auch seine ersten dokumentarischen Arbeiten entstanden. 2002-2004 studierte er Audiovisuelle Produktion an der London Metropolitan University. „Collective Dreams“ ist seine Diplomarbeit. Zur Zeit arbeitet er an seinem ersten Dokumentarfilm mit Spielfilmlänge.

Director Sepp R. Brudermann, born in 1975 in Vienna, studied graphic art and free art at the Kunsthochschule in Vienna. His obligatory community service (in lieu of military service) involved working in the Jewish Museum in Vilnius, where he co-directed his first documentary in 2001. From 2002-2004 he studied audiovisual production at London Metropolitan University. “Collective Dreams” is his graduation work. He is currently working on his first feature-length documentary film.
