Inhalt/ Summary

Drei betagte finnische Jazzmusiker stehen im Mittelpunkt des Films von Jouko Aaltonen. Neben dem Swing, der sie auch noch im hohen Alter auszeichnet, sind es gemeinsame Erfahrungen, die sie verbinden. Alle drei waren in den 20er Jahren ins sowjetische Karelien gezogen und als Häftlinge in die Lager Stalins geraten. Ihrer Musik sind sie auch dort treu geblieben: Alle drei spielten in den Gefangenenorchestern. Nach ihrer Entlassung machten sie die Musik zu ihrem Broterwerb. Das Gefühl für den richtigen Swing hatte ihnen geholfen, den Krieg und die Lager zu überstehen, nun half ihnen die Musik, auch die Schattenseiten des Lebens zu überwinden. Denn selbst in dunklen Zeiten sind sie der Botschaft des Swing stets gefolgt: Always look on the bright side of life.

Three elderly Finnish jazz musicians are the focus of this film by Jouko Aaltonen. Apart from the swing they still possess, it is their shared experiences that bind them. All three spent time in Stalin’s labour camps in the 1920s, where they remained faithful to their music, playing in the prisoners’ orchestras. When they were freed, they earned their living by music. If it was their sense of swing that helped them to survive the war and the camps, it was now their music that helped them overcome the dark side of life. For even in the worst of times, they have held fast to the message of swing: Always look on the bright side of life.
