Inhalt/ Summary

Ein dokumentarisches Road-Movie über Liina, Regisseurin des Films, und ihren Großvater Afanassi. Die beiden unternehmen eine lange Zugreise von Estland nach Kanina, Afanssis Geburtstort, ein winziges Dorf irgendwo in der russischen Provinz. Vor über fünfzig Jahren wurde Afanassi nach Estland versetzt, um dort seinen Militärdienst abzuleisten. Über einen Telefonanruf, bei dem Afanassi falsch verbunden wurde, lernte er eine junge Estin kennen: Maimu. Die beiden sind mittlerweile seit 50 Jahren verheiratet. Viel hat sich in Estland in den letzten Jahren verändert: Ideologien, Grenzen, auch die Menschen. Dennoch lebt Afanassi bis heute isoliert, beispielsweise hat er nie Estnisch gelernt. Umso bewegender ist Afanassis Reise zurück in die alte Heimat. Und weil ihn sein einziges Enkelkind dabei begleitet, ist es auch eine Reise zweier Menschen auf dem Wege zueinander.

A documentary road movie about Liina, the director of this documentary, and her grandfather Afanassi. Together, they set out on a long train journey from Estonia to Afanassi’s birthplace Kanina, a tiny village somewhere in provincial Russia. Afanassi was sent to Estonia fifty years ago for his military service. Through a wrong number on the phone he made the acquaintance of Maimu, the Estonian woman who has been his wife for 50 years now. Many things have changed in Estonia in recent years: ideologies, borders, and the people themselves. But Afanassi remains isolated. He has never learned the Estonian language. This makes the journey back to his homeland all the more affecting. And because he undertakes the journey with his only grandchild, it is also a journey of two people growing closer to one another.

Regisseurin Liina Triskina wurde 1976 geboren. Sie studierte Romanistik und Kulturtheorie am Estonian Institute for Humanities. Filmregie studierte Triskina am European Film College und an der School of Cinema of Catalonia in Barcelona, wo sie 2002 ihren Abschluss machte.

Director Liina Triskina was born in 1976. She studied Romance languages and cultural theory at the Estonian Institute for Humanities. Triskina studied film directing at the European Film College and the School of Cinema of Catalonia in Barcelona, where she graduated in 2002.
