„Mr. Chinaski, Sie sind gefeuert!“ Immer wieder kriegt Hank Chinaski, das filmische Alter Ego des Schriftstellers Charles Bukowski, diesen Satz zu hören, egal, mit welchem Job er es versucht. Trotzdem ist er nicht bereit, seinen unsteten und ausschweifenden Lebensstil zu ändern. Hank ist nicht allein dem Alkohol verfallen, sondern auch den Frauen, dem Glücksspiel und dem Schreiben von Geschichten, die vermutlich niemals jemand drucken wird. Jan, die Frau, mit der er zusammenwohnt, führt ein ähnlich selbstzerstörerisches Leben. Wiederholt kommt es deshalb zu lautstarken Krächen in der ansonsten liebevollen Beziehung. Denn für beide gilt: „Manche Leute werden niemals verrückt. Was für echt schreckliche Leben die führen müssen!“ Mit Matt Dillon und Lili Taylor in den Hauptrollen glänzend besetzt, ist „Factotum“ die mit Abstand beste Bukowski-Verfilmung. Nicht zuletzt, weil es dem norwegischen Regisseur Bent Hamer gelingt, dem exzessiven Gebaren, mit dem der Autor sein Leben beschrieb, eine lakonische Inszenierung entgegenzusetzen, wie man sie aus Hamers erfolgreichen Filmen „Eggs“ und „Kitchen Stories“ kennt.

“Mr. Chinaski, you’re fired!” It’s a sentence that Hank Chinaski, the filmic alter ego of writer Charles Bukowski, is used to hearing, no matter what job he turns his hand to. But he has no intention of changing his dissolute life. Hank is far too fond of alcohol – and of women, gambling and writing stories that will probably never get published. Jan, the woman he lives with, is just as self-destructive as he is. And so their otherwise loving relationship is punctuated by slanging matches. As far as they are both concerned, “Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must live.” Brilliantly cast with Matt Dillon and Lili Taylor in the leading roles, “Factotum” is by far the best Bukowski adaptation to date. Not least because Norwegian director Bent Hamer manages to balance the excesses described by the author with the kind of laconic imagery we have already seen in his acclaimed films “Eggs” and “Kitchen Stories”.

Regisseur Bent Hamer, Jahrgang 1956, studierte Film, Literatur und Kunst an der Universität von Stockholm und an der dortigen Filmhochschule. Anschließend drehte er mehrere Kurzfilme und einen Dokumentarfilm. Sein Spielfilmdebüt „Eggs“ wurde 1995 bei den Nordischen Filmtagen Lübeck mit dem NDR-Förderpreis und dem Baltischen Filmpreis ausgezeichnet. 1998 war Bent Hamer in Lübeck mit seinem Spielfilm „Ein Tag mehr in der Sonne“ vertreten. Sein nächster Film „Kitchen Stories“ feierte – wie „Eggs“ – seine Premiere in der Quinzaine des Réalisateurs in Cannes. Bent Hamer ist auch jeweils Produzent und Drehbuchautor seiner Filme.

Director Bent Hamer, born in 1956, studied film, literature and art at the University of Stockholm and the Stockholm Film School. He then made several short films and a documentary. His feature film debut “Eggs” won the NDR Promotion Prize and the Baltic Films Prize at the 1995 Nordic Film Days Lübeck. His feature film “En dag til i solen” (“Water Easy Reach”) was screened at the 1998 Nordic Film Days Lübeck. His next film “Kitchen Stories” premiered, as “Eggs” did, in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs at Cannes. Bent Hamer also produces and scripts his films.
