Inhalt/ Summary

Alabama 1933. Auf der Flucht aus Dogville geraten die Gangstertochter Grace und ihr Vater auf die Baumwollplantage Manderlay, wo die schwarzen Arbeiter und ihre Familien noch immer wie Sklaven gehalten werden. Nach dem plötzlichen Tod der Matriarchin Mam übernimmt Grace die Leitung der Plantage und schenkt den Versklavten die Freiheit, doch die sind darüber alles andere als glücklich. Unterstützt von vier bewaffneten Handlangern ihres Vaters, ist die junge Frau entschlossen, Demokratie und Fortschritt nach Manderlay zu bringen. Doch das Vertrauen der ehemaligen Sklaven zu gewinnen, erweist sich als eine langwierige Aufgabe für Grace, zumal ihre Weltverbesserungsmaßnahmen immer wieder Rückschläge erleiden. Wie schon „Dogville“ spielt auch der zweite Teil der Amerika-Trilogie Lars von Triers in extrem reduzierten Kulissen, die häufig nur zeichnerisch auf dem Studioboden angedeutet sind. Und erneut ist dem dänischen Regisseur ein provozierendes Werk gelungen, an dessen stilisierter Darstellung von Rassismus und amerikanischer Lebenswirklichkeit sich die Geister scheiden werden.

Alabama, 1933. On the run from Dogville, Grace and her gangster father end up on the Manderlay cotton plantation where the black workers and their families are still treated like slaves. When matriarch Mam dies unexpectedly, Grace takes the helm and gives the downtrodden workers their freedom. They are anything but happy about it. With the help of four armed friends of her father, Grace determines to bring democracy and progress to Manderlay. But gaining the trust of the former slaves proves an uphill struggle and her attempts to make the world a better place suffer constant setbacks. The second part of Lars von Trier’s America trilogy, like “Dogville” before it, is set against an extremely reduced backdrop, sometimes merely sketched on the studio floor. Another thought-provoking work from this Danish director whose stylised portrayals of racism and American reality are bound to cause controversy.

Regisseur Lars von Trier, geboren 1956, machte 1983 seinen Abschluss an der Dänischen Filmhochschule. Er ist einer der gefeiertesten und umstrittensten Regisseure der Gegenwart. Seinen Ruhm begründete er mit der Europa-Trilogie „The Element of Crime“ (1984), „Epidemic“ (1987) und „Europa“ (1991). 1992 gründete er zusammen mit Peter Aalbæck Jensen die Produktionsfirma Zentropa Entertainments. 1995 spielte Lars von Trier die zentrale Rolle bei der Entwicklung des Dogma 95 Manifests, das Filmemacher weltweit beeinflusst hat. Sein eigener Beitrag zu Dogma war der Film „Idioten“ (1998), der mit „Breaking the Waves“ (1996) und „Dancer in the Dark“ (2000), dem Gewinner der Goldenen Palme in Cannes, die Golden-Heart-Trilogie bildet. „Manderlay“ ist nach „Dogville“ (2003) der zweite Film der geplanten Trilogie „USA – Land of Opportunities“.

Director Lars von Trier, born in 1956, graduated in 1983 from the Danish Film School. He is one of today’s most celebrated and controversial directors. He came to fame with his Europa trilogy “The Element of Crime” (1984), “Epidemic” (1987) and “Europa” (1991). In 1992, together with Peter Aalbæck Jensen, he founded the production company Zentropa Entertainments. In 1995, Lars von Trier was the driving force behind the development of the Dogma 95 Manifesto that has influenced film-makers throughout the world. His own contribution to Dogma was the film “Idiots” (1998), which, together with “Breaking the Waves” (1996) and his Palme d’Or-winning “Dancer in the Dark” (2000), forms part of the “Golden Heart” trilogy. “Manderlay” follows “Dogville” (2003) as the second in his planned trilogy “USA – Land of Opportunities”.
