Das US-Remake des norwegischen Psychothrillers: Auch in Christopher Nolans „Insomnia“ wird ein Polizist in den hohen Norden versetzt, um bei der Suche nach einem Frauenmörder zu helfen. Aus Nord-Norwegen wird Alaska, Stellan Skarsgårds Rolle übernimmt Al Pacino. Das Motiv der hellen Nächte und der quälenden Schlaflosigkeit ist zwar noch vorhanden, tritt aber eher in den Hintergrund. Stattdessen wird der Plot stärker von der nicht ganz makellosen Vergangenheit des Polizisten bestimmt. Der Mörder – Robin Williams in einer für ihn außergewöhnlichen Rolle – hat offensichtlich etwas gegen den Ermittelnden in der Hand. Der Polizist steht vor der heiklen Frage, mit dem Gejagten einen Pakt einzugehen. Die Kritik hob an Nolans Remake insbesondere den moralischen Konflikt, die geschickte Nutzung der Naturlandschaft sowie das umwerfende Spiel Al Pacinos hervor.

The US remake of the Norwegian psychological thriller. Christopher Nolan’s “Insomnia” also features a detective being sent to the far north – this time Alaska – in search of a woman-killer, with Stellan Skarsgård’s role played by Al Pacino. Though the light nights and insomnia are still factors, they are less prominent here. Instead, the film focuses more strongly on the less than immaculate past of the detective. The murderer – an unusual role for Robin Williams – clearly has a card to play against the investigator, who finds himself facing the possibility of making a pact with the criminal. Critics praised Nolan’s remake for its portrayal of moral conflict, its use of landscape and for Pacino’s breathtaking performance.

Schon als Siebenjähriger begann er, Super-8-Filme zu drehen. 1989 sendete TV-Sender PBS einen seiner Kurzfilme. „Larcency“ wurde 1996 auf dem Cambridge Film Festival gezeigt. Für sein Spielfilmdebüt „Following“ erhielt er zahlreiche Preise, unter anderem den Tiger Award auf dem Filmfestival in Rotterdam und den Silver Hitchcock Award auf dem British Film Festival in Dinard. Der Durchbruch gelang Nolan 2000 mit „Memento“, mit dem er Film-Noir-Hommage, Hollywood und Filmexperiment verband: Eine Rachegeschichte wird hier rückwärts erzählt, weil dem Protagonisten das Langzeitgedächtnis fehlt. „Memento“ wurde mit Preisen überhäuft und sogar für einen Oscar nominiert.

His feature film debut “Following” won several prizes, including the Tiger Award at the Film Festival in Rotterdam and the Silver Hitchcock Award at the British Film Festival in Dinard. Nolan’s breakthrough came in 2000 with “Memento”, a blend of film noir homage, Hollywood and experimental film that unravels a tale of vengeance from end-point to beginning, because the main character has no long-term memory. “Memento” swept countless prizes and was even nominated for an Oscar.
