Go west! Ein gutes Dutzend lettischer Emigranten gibt Auskunft über das Leben in Amerika. Die meisten von ihnen leben in New York und sind jünger als dreißig. Sie alle empfinden ihr Dasein in den USA als deutliche Verbesserung. Auch wenn sie, die sich selbst schon mal als die hiesigen „Arbeitspferde“ bezeichnen, von einem 16-Stunden-Tag berichten. Für viele wäre die Alternative: in Riga arbeitslos zu sein. Und wenn man es richtig anstellt, kann man hier an einem Tag so viel verdienen wie in Lettland während eines ganzen Monats: „New York ist eine Stadt, die dich aufsaugt“. Freimütig sprechen sie aber auch von Zukunftssorgen und dem Anpassungsdruck, dem sie unterliegen. In Lettland, dem seit seiner Unabhängigkeit jährlich hunderte junger Menschen den Rücken kehren, stieß der Film auf ein riesiges Publikumsinteresse. In Anbetracht der wirtschaftlichen Lage suchen immer mehr Letten ihr Glück im Ausland. Manche nur vorübergehend. Manche für immer. Viele in Amerika, aber es könnte auch Tokio sein. Und wer in Amerika ist, der träumt vielleicht schon von Tobago …

Go west! A dozen Latvian emigrants tell of life in America, Most of them are under thirty and living in New York. All of them find life in the USA a distinct improvement – even though they describe themselves as “work-horses”, working a 16-hour day. For many of them, the alternative would be unemployment in Riga. And if you play your cards right, you can earn as much here in one day as you can in an entire month in Latvia. “New York is a city that sucks you in.” They speak candidly of their fears for the future and the pressure of integration. In Latvia, where the economic situation drives hundreds of young people to leave the country every year in search of a better life, the film met with enormous interest. Some come back. Some leave for good. Many go to America, but it might as well be Tokyo. And those in America may already be dreaming of Tobago …

Regisseur Sandris Jura arbeitete als Autor und Kameramann, ehe er mit „Found in America“ seinen ersten eigenen Dokumentarfilm drehte. Unter anderem begleitete er zuvor als Kameramann Filmexpeditionen nach Island (2001) und zum Yukon (2002).

Director Sandris Jura worked as an author and cameraman before making his first documentary “Found in America”. Before that, he had accompanied film expeditions to Iceland (2001) and the Yukon (2002) as cameraman.
