Inhalt/ Summary

Seit elfhundert Jahren gibt es Pferde auf Island. Wikinger brachten sie mit, und seither leben sie hier – viele immer noch in freier Wildbahn. Über ein ganzes Jahr hinweg ist ihnen der Filmemacher Thorfinnur Gudnason gefolgt. Seine Bilder fügt er nun zu einer Geschichte. Sie erzählt von einer Stute, die sich mit ihrem neugeborenen Füllen von der Herde entfernt. Einen kurzen magischen Sommer verbringt sie mit einem wildernden Galan; während des langen, eisigen Winters ist sie schlimmen Entbehrungen ausgesetzt, ehe sie im Frühling erneut zu ihrer Herde findet. Mit wachem Blick für all die vielen Dramen, die der natürliche Kreislauf mit sich bringt, erzählt der Film von vielfältigen Überlebenskämpfen vor dem Hintergrund der wild-romantischen Landschaften Islands. Kurze Exkurse in die Vogelwelt und faszinierende Luftaufnahmen vervollständigen Thorfinnur Gudnasons außergewöhnliche Tier- und Naturbeobachtungen.

There have been horses on Iceland for more than a thousand years. They were brought by the Vikings and have lived there ever since – many of them in the wild. Filmmaker Thorfinnur Gudnason spent an entire year observing them. His images now tell a story: of a mare that leaves the herd with her newborn foal, spends a brief but magical summer with a roaming stallion, survives the ordeals of a harsh and icy winter and returns to her herd in the spring. With a keen eye for the dramatic cycle of nature, the film shows the struggle for survival in the rugged and romantic landscape of Iceland. Brief excursions into the world of birdlife and some fabulous aerial photography round off Thorfinnur Gudnason’s extraordinary study.

Thorfinnur Gudnason absolvierte 1988 ein Filmstudium am California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, Kalifornien. 1988-93 arbeitete er als Cutter, Kameramann, Regisseur und Produzent für das Isländische Fernsehen. Vor allem mit seinen Tierfilmen hat er sich seither auch internationales Renommee erworben: „Woodmouse – Life on the Run“ (1997), coproduziert u.a. mit National Geographic Television, lief auf internationalen Festivals und Fernsehkanälen. Gudnasons Sozialstudie „Lalli Johns“ (2001), über einen obdachlosen Kleinkriminellen, stellte an den isländischen Kinokassen einen Besucherrekord für Dokumentarfilme auf.

Thorfinnur Gudnason graduated in film from the California College of Arts and Crafts at Oakland, California in 1988. From 1988 to 1993 he worked as a cutter, cameraman, director and producer for Icelandic Television. His animal films have earned him an international reputation: “Woodmouse – Life on the Run” (1997), co-produced with National Geographic Television, was screened at international festivals and televised internationally. Gudnason’s sociological study “Lalli Johns” (2001), about a homeless petty criminal, broke Icelandic box office records for documentary films.
