Inhalt/ Summary

Im Jahre 1986 – die UdSSR steht im Afghanistan-Krieg – entziehen sich die beiden estnischen Brüder Aviar und Ulo Voitka ihrer Einberufung in die Rote Armee und fliehen in die tiefen Wälder. Sie bleiben dort und halten sich mit Diebstählen und Raubüberfällen am Leben – vierzehn Jahre lang.Am 29. Februar 2000 werden Aivar und Ulo Voitka in einer Aufsehen erregenden Polizeiaktion festgenommen. Um ihre Geschichte entspinnt sich seither ein Heldenmythos, der die beiden Brüder im kollektiven Bewusstsein auf eine Stufe stellt mit den estnischen Partisanen.Die Geschichte der Voitka-Brüder erzählt vom Traum zweier junger Männer von der totalen Freiheit und ihrem tragischen Scheitern. Sie beschreibt, auf welche Weise in den Medien aus einfachen Kleinkriminellen Volkshelden wurden. Und sie gibt Einblick in die innere Verfassung der estnischen Gesellschaft, die sich am Beginn ihrer staatlichen Unabhängigkeit nach kultureller Identität und einem modernen Volksmythos sehnt.

In the year 1986, with the Soviet Union embroiled in the war with Afghanistan, Estonian brothers Aviar and Ulo Voitka evade conscription to the Red Army and go into hiding in the forest, where they stay, living by theft and robbery, for fourteen years.On 29 February 2000 Aivar and Ulo Voitka are captured in a heart-stopping police raid. They have been mythologised as heroes ever since, revered in the collective consciousness as Estonian partisans.The tale of the Voitka brothers is about two young men’s dreams of freedom, and their tragic failure. The film describes how the media turned two simple petty criminals into national heroes, and gives an insight into the mindset of Estonian society in the early days of independence, with its yearning for cultural identity and modern myth.

Pekka Lehto wurde 1948 geboren. Er arbeitete nach einem Studium an der Film- und Fernsehakademie in Helsinki und der Béla-Balász-Filmschule in Budapest als Regieassistent und Tonmann bei verschiedenen Spielfilmen. Sein erster eigener Film entstand 1976. 1986-88 leitete er die Produktionsabteilung der Finnish Film Foundation und war verantwortlich für die staatliche Filmproduktionsunterstützung. Er arbeitete mit der Jörn Donner Produktionsfirma und leitete dann eine der erfolgreichsten finnischen Produktionsfirmen, KinoFinlandia.

Pekka Lehto was born in 1948. After studying at the Helsinki Film and Television Academy and the Béla Balász Film School in Budapest, he worked as a director's assistant and sound engineer on various feature films. He made his own first film in 1976. From 1986-88 he was head of the production department at the Finnish Film Foundation and was in charge of state film production funding. He has worked with the Jörn Donner production company and subsequently headed one of Finland’s most successful production firms, KinoFinlandia.
