Sascha, Kristo und Mikk sind drei junge Esten, die ihren 18. Geburtstag feiern. Und der fällt bei jedem von ihnen anders aus: Denn während Sascha am Rand der Gesellschaft existiert und in Abbruchhäusern lebt, entstammt Kristo einem durchschnittlichen Mittelklasse-Heim und Mikk der kleinen, aber sehr wohlhabenden Oberschicht Estlands. Sein 18. Geburtstag wird mit Büffet, Band und teuren Geschenken in einem hippen Szene-Lokal zelebriert. Bei Kristo geht es bescheidener zu: Seine Eltern haben ein billiges Motel gemietet, und auch die Feier fällt längst nicht so üppig und schwelgerisch aus. Sascha verbringt seinen Geburtstag im Alkoholrausch mit anderen Obdachlosen – der Tag endet in Tränen und Schlägereien. Die beeindruckend wirklichkeitsnahe Studie über soziale Zustände im heutigen Estland verbindet eigene Aufnahmen der Jugendlichen und Dokumentarisches aus ihrem Alltag mit Interview-Sequenzen, in denen Sascha, Kristo und Mikk über ihre Vergangenheit und Zukunft befragt werden. Die atemberaubende Montage lässt angesichts der krassen sozialen Unterschiede den Atem stocken.

Sascha, Kristo and Mikk are three young Estonians celebrating their 18th birthdays – each in a different way. Sascha lives on the margins of society, Kristo is an average middle class kid, and Mikk belongs to Estonia’s small wealthy elite. Mikk celebrates his 18th birthday in a trendy club with live music, good food and expensive gifts. Kristo’s parents have hired a cheap motel for the occasion, with a more downmarket party. Sascha spends his birthday in an alcoholic stupor with other homeless people and the day ends in tears and violence. This hard-hitting study of Estonian society today combines footage shot by the youths themselves with a documentation of their daily lives and interviews in which Sascha, Kristo and Mikk are asked about their past and their future. The montage highlights Estonia’s stark social differences with a candour that takes your breath away.

Urmas E. Liiv, geboren am 1967 in Tallin, Estland, besuchte von 1984 bis 1989 die Fakultät für Biologie und Geografie an der Universität von Tartu. Anschließend, von 1992 bis 1998, studierte er an der audiovisuellen Fakultät der pädagogischen Hochschule in Tallin mit dem Studienschwerpunkt Filmregie. Er arbeitete als Gymnasiallehrer und Kameraassistent und ist von 1994 bis 2001 Hauptgeschäftsführer am Zentrum für audiovisuelle Kultur. Als Cutter und Kameramann hat er seit 1993 an zahlreichen Dokumentar- und Spielfilmen mitgewirkt. Sein Dokumentarfilm „Arnold” wurde mit nationalen Filmpreisen ausgezeichnet.

Urmas E. Liiv, born in 1967 in Tallin, Estonia, studied biology and geography at the University of Tartus from 1984 to 1989. From 1992 to 1998 he studied film directing at the audiovisual faculty of the Teaching College of Tallin. He worked as a secondary school teacher and camera assistant and from 1994 to 2001 was managing director of the Centre for Audiovisual Culture. He has worked as a cutter and cameraman on many documentary and feature film projects since 1993. His documentary film “Arnold” won national film awards.
