Inhalt/ Summary

Als Lettland im Sommer 1941 von deutschen Truppen besetzt wurde, nahmen die Nazis auch alle „Zigeuner der Stadt Sabile fest und befahlen ihnen, im nahe gelegenen Wald ihre eigenen Gräber zu schaufeln. Kurz bevor die tödlichen Schüsse fallen sollten, schaltete sich der Bürgermeister Sabiles ein: „Aufhören! Sie sind Bürger meiner Stadt. Wollt ihr sie erschießen, dann tötet auch mich!" Damit rettete er rund 200 Roma das Leben - eine Tat, die noch das heutige Leben der Roma von Sabile beeinflusst. Sie werden von den Einwohnern der Stadt wohlwollend toleriert und können ihre Bräuche ungehindert pflegen. Die städtische Schule bietet ihnen eine eigene Klasse an, in der ihre Sprache gelehrt wird. In einer Mischung aus Archivmaterial, Augenzeugenberichten, nachgestellten Szenen und Dokumentarmaterial schafft „Für mein ganzes Leben" einen berührenden Brückenschlag zwischen einer historischen Begebenheit und ihren heutigen Auswirkungen. Er erzählt von Toleranz und Dankbarkeit - und gibt einen Einblick in das Leben Roma in Lettland."

When Latvia was occupied by German troops in the summer of 1941, the Nazis rounded up all the gypsies" in the town of Sabile and made them dig their own graves in the nearby forest. Just before the firing squad was to open fire, the mayor of Sabile stepped in: "Stop! These are citizens of my town. If you want to shoot them, then shoot me, too!" With that, he saved the lives of some 200 Roma - a fact that still marks the everyday life of the gypsies of Sabile. Accepted by the people of the town, they can follow their traditional customs unhindered. The local school even runs classes in their own language. With a blend of archive footage, eyewitness reports and documentary material, "For All My Life" forges a touching link between the events of history and their effect on the present day. It is a tale of tolerance and gratitude, and gives a deep insight into the life of the Roma in Latvia."

Regisseur Romualds Pipars, Jahrgang 1952, studierte von 1971 bis 1976 an der Staatlichen Universität Lettland Geographie. Er war als Regisseur, Kameramann, Drehbuchautor und Produzent an über 250 Filmen für das Dokumentarfilmstudio Riga, das lettische Staatsfernsehen und andere beteiligt.

Director Romualds Pipars, born in 1952, studied Geography from 1971 to 1976 at the State University of Latvia. He was involved, as director, cameraman, scriptwriter and producer, in more than 250 film projects for the Riga Documentary Film Studio, Latvian State Television and others.
