Grönland ist einer der am stärksten isolierten Orte der Erde - und gleichzeitig einer der gewalttätigsten: Diese beeindruckende Dokumentation wirft einen Blick auf die kleine Siedlung Ilulissiat in Westgrönland, wo die Verbrechensrate 18 Mal so hoch ist wie in Dänemark. Gewalt findet hier meist innerhalb der Familie statt, häufig ist Alkohol mit im Spiel. Der Jäger Jens hat im Suff seine Frau zusammengeschlagen. Naalu, Mutter von vier Kindern, hat ihren Mann erstochen, nachdem er sie jahrelang im Alkoholrausch terrorisiert hatte. Sie beide werden vom lokalen Gericht angeklagt. Doch das Rechtssystem verläuft hier anders: Im Mittelpunkt stehen nicht die Vergehen, sondern die Tatumstände. „Wir können nicht einfach Menschen aus unserer Gemeinschaft ausschließen. Wir brauchen jeden und müssen diejenigen akzeptieren, die wir haben, sagt der Richter. Der Film folgt den beiden Angeklagten bis zum Urteilsspruch, interviewt ihre Familien, Polizisten sowie Richter und verbindet dies mit faszinierenden Bildern von Grönlands barscher Natur. Daraus ergibt sich das facettenreiche Bild einer Gesellschaft unter extremen Lebensumständen."

Greenland is one of the world's most isolated places - and also one of the most violent. This impressive documentary casts a glance at the settlement of Ilulissiat in West Greenland, where the crime rate is 18 times higher than in Denmark. Most violent crimes here are committed within the family, and alcohol is often a factor. Hunter Jens has beaten up his wife in a drunken stupor. Naalau, mother of four, has stabbed her hard-drinking and abusive husband. Both appear before the local court. But the legal system here is different: the focus is not on the crime itself, but on the circumstances in which it was committed. We can't just evict people from the community. We need everyone and we must accept whomever we've got," says the judge. The film follows the two accused right through to their sentencing, interviews their families, the police and the judge, and combines all this with fascinating images of the rugged Greenland scenery. The result is a complex portrait of a society living under extreme conditions."

Regisseur Sasha Snow, geboren 1968, studierte an der National Film and Television School, London. 1997 bekam er die BAFTA/Post Office Scholarship für den „besten studentischen Film. Für seine Abschlussarbeit „A St. Petersburg Symphony" (2000), erhielt er 2000 den SILVER SPIKE in Valladolid, Spanien. Seit 1999 arbeitet er als Kameramann für BBC Television Arts und dreht eigene Filme."

Director Sasha Snow, born in 1968, graduated from the National Film and Television School, London.
