Stockholm in den 50-er Jahren: Der 16-jährige Erik hat ein Problem mit Gewalt. Zu Hause wird er von seinem Stiefvater verprügelt, von der Schule wird er verwiesen, weil er einen Mitschüler brutal zusammengeschlagen hat. Das Internat Stjärnsberg ist Eriks letzte Chance, zum Abitur zugelassen zu werden. Doch auch hier entkommt er nicht der Gewalt: Unter den Internatsschülern herrscht ein perfides System aus Erniedrigung und Brutalität, an dessen Spitze der junge Adlige Otto steht. Erik wird zur Zielscheibe hinterhältiger Schikane und kann sich nur schwer einem grausamen Machtspiel entziehen. Für Erik geht es dabei um alles: Wie kann er seine Würde bewahren, ohne in die Gewaltspirale gezogen zu werden, die seine Zukunft bedroht? Diese aufwühlende Studie über Machtmissbrauch und die Funktion von Gewalt in der Gesellschaft wartet mit erstklassigen Jungdarstellern und einer packenden Bildsprache auf. Erst vor wenigen Wochen äußerst erfolgreich in Schwedens Kinos angelaufen, wurde diese Verfilmung von Jan Guillous autobiographischem Roman von Kritikern zum schwedischen Film des Jahres gekürt.

Stockholm in the 1950s: 16-year-old Erik has a problem with violence. Beaten at home by his stepfather, he is thrown out of school for beating up another pupil. Stjärnsberg boarding school is Erik's last chance of being allowed to sit his school leaving exams. But even here, violence is rife: a perfidious system of humiliation and brutality prevails among the boarders, headed by the young aristocrat Otto. Erik becomes the victim of underhand bullying and has difficulty escaping the cruel power game. It is a question of all or nothing for Erik: how can he keep his dignity without being drawn into the spiral of violence that threatens his future? This harrowing study of the abuse of power and the way it functions in society has an excellent cast of young actors and a compelling visuality. Released in Swedish cinemas just a few weeks ago, this film version of Jan Guillou's autobiographical novel has already been hailed by critics as the best Swedish film of the year.

Regisseur Mikael Håfström, geboren 1960 in Lund, studierte Film an der Universität von Stockholm und der Hochschule für Bildende Künste in New York City. Seither arbeitet er als Drehbuchautor und Regisseur für Film und Fernsehen. Sein Regiedebüt gab er 1989 mit dem Fernseh-Krimi „Terrorns Finger, gefolgt von den Krimis „De Giriga" und „Botgörarna". Mit dem Mafia-Thriller „Vendetta" folgte 1995 sein Kinodebüt. Anschließend drehte er die TV-Miniserie „House of Shadows" (1996) sowie das Drama „En dag i taget" und den Kurzfilm „Angel of Death" (1997). Im Jahr 2001 hatte er Erfolg mit seinem zweiten Kinospielfilm „Days Like This", einer Romanverfilmung, zu der er zusammen mit dem Autor Hans Gunnarsson auch das Drehbuch verfasst hatte. Bei „Evil", Håfströms drittem Spielfilm, setzen sie ihre Kooperation fort. Mikael Håfström war auch beteiligt am Drehbuch zu „Kops" von Josef Fares. "

Director Mikael Håfström was born in Lund, Sweden, and studied film at the University of Stockholm and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Since then he has worked as a screenwriter and director for film and television. He made his directing debut in 1989 with the television mystery Terrorns Finger", followed by "De Giriga" and "Botgörarna". The mafia thriller "Vendetta" in 1995 marked his cinema debut. He then went on to make the TV mini-series "House of Shadows" (1996), the drama "En dag i taget" and the short film "Angel of Death" (1997). In 2001 he had a success with his second cinema feature "Days Like This", based on a novel and scripted in collaboration with the author Hans Gunnarsson. They also worked together on his third feature film, "Evil". Mikael Håfström was also involved in scripting "Kops" by Josef Fares."
