Inhalt/ Summary

Simon ist ein mysteriöser, schweigsamer Mann mit krimineller Vergangenheit. Er reist aus den USA nach Island, der Heimat seiner Mutter. Dort hat er vor vielen Jahren einen Sommer verbracht – und dort will er sein verpfuschtes Leben beenden. Doch bevor es dazu kommt, begegnet er Dúa, einer eigenwilligen jungen Künstlerin. Sie kümmert sich, während ihr Onkel im Krankenhaus liegt, um dessen Hof und Tiere. Darunter ist auch ein isländischer Falke, ein seltenes und geschütztes Tier, für das auf dem Schwarzmarkt hohe Preise gezahlt werden. Zwischen Simon und Dúa besteht eine magische Verbindung, die ihn vermuten lässt, es könne sich um seine Tochter handeln. Der Ortspolizist, der Simon von Anfang an mit Misstrauen verfolgt, sieht in ihm nicht nur einen potentiellen Störenfried, sondern vor allem einen Konkurrenten. Sein sexuelles Begehren gegenüber Dúa schlägt in offenen Hass um, der ihn veranlasst, den Hof niederzubrennen und die Tiere töten zu lassen. Die Situation eskaliert, als er Dúa bedroht und Simon ihr beisteht. Die beiden müssen das Land verlassen. Mit einem polnischen Fischerboot entkommen sie nach Deutschland, den Falken haben sie bei sich. Simon will den Vogel in Hamburg an reiche Araber verkaufen, aber das ist nicht so einfach. Und Dúa hat ganz andere Pläne … Ein äußerst intensives Drama voller magischer Orte und Momente mit großartigen Darstellern.

Simon is a mysterious, silent man with a criminal past. He leaves the USA for Iceland, the home of his mother, where he spent a summer many years ago. It is there that he plans to take his life. But before he can do so, he meets the strong-willed young artist Dúa. Dúa's uncle is in hospital and she is looking after his farm and animals for him. One of the creatures she cares for is a rare Icelandic falcon, a protected species for which high prices are paid on the black market. There is a magical link between Simon and Dúa that makes him feel she might be his daughter. The local policeman, who has been watching Simon with suspicion right from the start, sees him not only as a potential troublemaker, but above all as a rival. His sexual desire for Dúa turns into open hatred, prompting him to burn down the farm and have the animals killed. The situation escalates when he threatens Dúa, and Simon stands by her. The two of them have to leave the country. They escape to Germany on a Polish trawler, with the falcon. Simon wants to sell the bird to wealthy Arabs, but it is not as easy as he thinks. And Dúa has other plans … An intense, beautifully acted story full of magical places and mysterious moments.

Regisseur Fridrik Thór Fridriksson, geboren 1954 in Reykjavik, ist einer der führenden Regisseure und Produzenten Islands. Sein erster Spielfilm „Weiße Wale“ wurde 1987 mit der Lübecker „Filmlinse“ ausgezeichnet, dem heutigen Publikumspreis der „Lübecker Nachrichten“. Sein zweiter Spielfilm „Kinder der Natur“ erhielt 23 internationale Preise und in Lübeck den Preis der Nordischen Filminstitute. Für „Movie Days“ erhielt er 1994 bei den Nordischen Filmtagen den Ehrenpreis der Baltischen Filmschaffenden. Bei den NFL 2000 wurde Fridrikssons „Angels of the Universe“ gezeigt, ein Film, den ein Viertel der isländischen Bevölkerung in den Kinos sah. Als Produzent hat Fridrik Thór Fridriksson mit seiner Icelandic Film Corporation nicht nur seine eigenen Filme realisiert, sondern auch vielen Regietalenten den Weg gebahnt.

Director Fridrik Thór Fridriksson, born in Reykjavik 1954, is one of Iceland's leading directors and producers. “White Whales”, his feature debut, was awarded the Lübeck Film Lens in 1987, now called the Audience Award of the Lübecker Nachrichten newspaper. His second feature “Börn natturunnar” (“Children of Nature”, 1991) received 23 international awards, including the Award of Nordic Film Institutes in Lübeck, where “Movie Days” went on to receive the Baltic Filmmakers' Special Award in 1994. Fridiksson's “Angels of the Universe” was screened at the Nordic Film Days Lübeck 2000 and was seen in cinemas by a quarter of Iceland's population. As producer Fridriksson and his Icelandic Film Corporation haven not only realised his own films, but paved the way for the careers of many talented young directors.
