Inhalt/ Summary

Ein Mann kommt mit dem Zug nach Helsinki, wird brutal zusammengeschlagen und stirbt kurz darauf im Krankenhaus. Damit beginnt sein zweites Leben. Ohne Identität und Erinnerung kommt er in einer Containersiedlung am Hafen zu sich. Er wird von einer Familie aufgepäppelt und kann bald seinen eigenen Wohncontainer einrichten. In der Suppenküche begegnet er Irma, einer Offizierin der Heilsarmee. Bald verbindet die beiden eine scheue Liebe. Er erhält Arbeit in der Kleiderkammer der Heilsarmee, überzeugt deren Musiker, ihr Repertoire zu erweitern, organisiert Konzerte der Band. Dann tauchen mit Bruchstücken der Erinnerung die Probleme auf: Der Mann findet eine Arbeit als Schweißer, gerät aber, bevor er sie antreten kann, bei dem Versuch ein Konto zu eröffnen, in einen Banküberfall und kommt ins Gefängnis. Irma kann ihm noch einmal helfen, dann meldet sich auf einen Zeitungsbericht hin seine Ehefrau. "Einen Traum, geträumt von gebrochenen Herzen, deren Taschen leer sind", nennt Kaurismäki den zweiten Teil seiner "Trilogie über Arbeitslosigkeit", der in Cannes den Großen Preis der Jury erhielt. Ein mit finnischen Tangos und altem Rock 'n' Roll unterlegtes sozialrealistisches Märchen mit grandiosen Schauspielern (Kati Outinen ausgezeichnet als Beste Darstellerin in Cannes). Zugleich eine Hommage an die Stadt Helsinki, deren abgewandte Seiten in magischem Licht und beeindruckender Fotografie erscheinen.

A man arrives in Helsinki by train, is beat up and dies in hospital. His second life begins. With neither identity nor memory, he comes to in a container depot in the docks. A family helps him and he soon has a container of his own, which he turns into a cosy home. The man falls in love with Irma, a Salvation Army officer at the soup kitchen. Over meals and excursions, their relationship blossoms. He finds work in the Salvation Army clothes store, persuades the band to extend its repertoire, organises gigs. But as his memory gradually returns, problems begin to arise. He finds work as a welder, but before he even starts, he becomes involved in a bank robbery during his attempt to open a bank account and ends up in jail. Irma can help him once again, but then his wife responds to a newspaper report. "A dream of lonely hearts with empty pockets" is what Aki Kaurismäki calls this second part of his "trilogy about unemployment", which was awarded the Grand Prix du Jury in Cannes. A social-realist fairytale, enlivened by Finnish tangos and good old Rock'n'Roll, and featuring supurb performances (Kati Outinen was named Best Actress in Cannes). It is also a homage to the city of Helsinki, whose hidden sides are captured in magical light by the impressive photography.

Regisseur Aki Kaurismäki, Jahrgang 1957, brach sein Medienstudium ab – um das wirkliche Leben als Briefträger und Tellerwäscher zu studieren – und gründete 1981 mit seinem zwei Jahre älteren Bruder Mika und vier anderen jungen Filmemachern – darunter Veikko Aaltonen – die Villealfa-Filmproduktion. Im selben Jahr drehten Aki und Mika Kaurismäki die Dokumentarfilm „Saima-Rock“. Als Spielfilmregisseur debütierte Aki Kaurismäki 1983 mit einer Adaption von Dostojewskis Roman „Schuld und Sühne“. Sein karger lakonischer Regiestil zeichnete auch sein folgendes rund ein Dutzend Spielfilme aus, deren Antiheld oft Matti Pellonpää war. Aki und Mika Kaurismäki sind heute die bedeutendsten finnischen Regisseure mit internationalem Renommee.

Director Aki Kaurismäki, born in 1957, dropped out of medical school and enrolled in the school of life instead, working as a postman and a dishwasher before founding the Villealfa film production company in 1981 with his younger brother Mika and four other young film-makers. That same year, Aki and Mika Kaurismäki made their documentary film “Saima Rock”. Aki Kaurismäki made his debut as a feature film director in 1983 with an adaptation of Dostoyevsky's “Crime and Punishment”. His laconic style was to be the hallmark of a dozen further feature films, many of them with Matti Pellonpää in the role of anti-hero. Today, Aki and Mika Kaurismäki are Finland's leading directors and have gained international fame.
