Eine erfolgreiche Geschäftsfrau in den 40-ern durchlebt die vielleicht schlimmste Zeit ihres Lebens: Ihr Privatleben sieht sie als gescheitert an und verlässt daraufhin ihre Familie. In einem anonymen Großstadtviertel mietet sie sich eine Wohnung und begibt sich auf die Suche nach einem Sinn in ihrem neuen Leben. In kühl inszenierten Tableaus und langen Einstellungen entwirft „Der Mietvertrag“ ein faszinierendes und verstörendes Bild von Einsamkeit und Gefühllosigkeit in der modernen Welt. Zugleich beschreibt er ein Lebensgefühl der postsowjetischen Gesellschaft: Äußerer Frieden bringt nicht automatisch den Frieden von innen. Das Regiedebüt von Kristijonas Vildziunas lief im diesjährigen Controcorrente-Wettbewerb von Venedig.

A successful businesswoman in her 40s goes through what may have been the worst time of her life. Feeling she has failed in her private life, she leaves her family. She rents an apartment in an anonymous city neighbourhood and begins looking for meaning in her new life. In coolly staged tableaux and lingering shots, “The Lease” paints a fascinating and unsettling picture of loneliness and coldness in the modern world. At the same time, it describes the atmosphere of post-Soviet society: peace does not necessarily bring inner peace. Kristijonas Vildziuna's directing debut was screened in the Controcorrente competition at this year's Venice film festival.

Regisseur Kristijonas Vildziunas, Jahrgang 1970, wurde in Vilnius geboren. 1996 machte er seinen Abschluss an der littauischen Musikakademie, an der er Regiefach studierte. Sein Filmdebüt gab er 1995 mit dem Schwarzweiß-Film „The Days are Left“. "Der Mietvertrag" ist sein erster programmfüllender Spielfilm.

Director Kristijonas Vildziunas was born in Vilnius in 1970. He graduated in Directing at the Lithuanian Academy of Music in 1996. He made his film debut in 1995 with the black-and-white film “The Days Are Left”.
