Heute vergessen, gehörte Franz Osten einst zu den künhnsten Filmpionieren. Getragen von der Exotikwelle im Kino der Weimarer Republik verlässt er 1925 die geschützten Glasateliers von München und dreht den Buddha-Film „Die Leuchte Asiens“ in Indien. Zahlreiche, bislang unentdeckte Filmdokumente vergegenwärtigen die aufregende Indien-Expedition und den bayrischen Regisseur, der in den 30-er Jahren zum Aufbauhelfer für die indische Filmindustrie wurde.

One of southern Germany's boldest film pioneers, who helped to establish the film industry in India during the 1930s, his name is all but forgotten today. Franz Osten (1876-1956) made more than 60 films, some of them under sensationally innovative conditions. Inspired by the wave of exoticism that swept the world of cinema in the Weimar Republic, he set out on a highly adventurous enterprise in 1925 to make the Buddha film "Die Leuchte Asiens" on location in India. Gerald Koll uses extensive and previously unknown footage to trace the exciting Indian expedition of this maverick Bavarian.

Regisseur Gerald Koll, geboren 1966, studierte Medienwissenschaft, Germanistik und Geschichte. 1996 Dissertation über die Erotik im Stummfilm. Filmwissenschaftler, Filmpublizist und Filmemacher.

Director Gerald Koll, from Kiel, was born in 1966 and works on a freelance basis in many areas of the arts, mainly in film. He has contributed articles to newpapers, magazines, books and an encyclopaedia. He has published a book about eroticism in the silent movies of G.W.Pabst (“Pandora's Schätze”), created a “performance-reading-slide-show” (“Der Geist der Conquistadoren”), a play (“Die Natter”), a fictional short film and two documentaries for ARTE. He is currently working on a documentary about suicide.
