Wie funktioniert die globalisierte Marktwirtschaft? Und warum manchmal nicht? Einige ganz unglaubliche Antworten gibt dieser Dokumentarfilm über ein halbes Dutzend ökonomischer Nobodys aus Finnland, die in den Jahren 2001/2002 mit Lust und Laune zwanzig Millionen Dollar verpulvert haben. Zur Verfügung gestellt hatten ihnen das Geld multinationale Großunternehmen, darunter der Handy-Hersteller Nokia und die News Corporation des Medienmoguls Rupert Murdoch. Der Plan der Sechs war einfach – sie wollten Milliardäre werden. Mit ihrer Firma Riot Entertainment (Riot-E) wollten sie ein elektronisches Unterhaltungsnetzwerk für Mobiltelefon-Nutzer etablieren. Zu den Zeiten einer überhitzten Luftblasenökonomie besaß das Unternehmen tatsächlich Filialen in Europa, Asien, Amerika sowie mehr als hundert Mitarbeiter. Doch dann war auf einmal die Luft raus. Aus Interviews mit Teilhabern und Geschäftspartnern, unter Beifügung rasanter Clips und Comic-Strips, Sound-Bites und Split-Screens mixt Regisseur Kim Finn in „Riot On!“ einen anregenden Cocktail aus Ökonomie, Technologie und Pop-Kultur.

How does the global economy work? And why does it sometimes not work at all? This documentary about a handful of economic nobodies from Finland who shot their way through twenty million dollars in 2001/2002 comes up with some incredible replies. But where did they get the money? From big multinationals like Nokia and Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation. The plan was simple: they wanted to become multimillionaires. Their company Riot Entertainment (Riot-E) aimed to set up an electronic entertainment network for cellphone users. And in the heady days of the economic bubble, they actually had branches in Europe, Asia and America, employing a staff of more than a hundred. But then the bubble burst. Interviews with shareholders and partners are juxtaposed with fast-paced clips and comic strips, soundbites and split screens in director Kim Finn’s “Riot On!” – an exhilarating cocktail of big money, high technology and pop culture.

Regisseur Kim Finn hat im Fachbereich Film und Fernsehen an der Hochschule für Kunst und Design in Helsinki (UIAH), Fachrichtung Regie und Drehbuch, studiert. Er hat als Autor und Regisseur für das Fernsehen und beim Hörfunk gearbeitet, Musicals und Opern sowie zwei 16-teilige TV-Serien inszeniert und eigene Musikstücke geschrieben. Darüber hinaus war er journalistisch tätig.

Director Kim Finn studied directing and scriptwriting at the School of Art and Design in Helsinki (UIAH). He has worked as an author and director for television and radio, creating musicals, operas and two 16-part TV serials as well as composing his own music. He has also worked as a journalist.
