Inhalt/ Summary

Anfang der 70er Jahre in einem entlegenen Küstenort Schottlands. Die tiefgläubige Bess heiratet trotz größter Bedenken ihrer Sektengemeinde den Weltenbummler und Ölplattform-Arbeiter Jan. Die Zeit des Glücks ist kurz. Jan muss zur Plattform zurück, und Bess betet zu Gott, Jan möge schnell wiederkommen. Er kommt: als Opfer eines Arbeitsunfalls, querschnittsgelähmt. Nie wieder wird er Bess’ Geliebter sein. Er fordert Bess daher auf, sich einen Liebhaber zu suchen. Bess zögert, folgt dann aber Jans Wunsch und überschreitet Grenzen zu einer Welt, die ihr völlig fremd ist. In diesem Werk verarbeitet Lars von Trier bedingungslose Liebe, Schuld, Opfer, Erlösung und Wunder zu einem komplexen Drama voller Überraschungen. Emily Watson als Bess wurde mit ihrer herausragenden Leistung auf Anhieb weltberühmt. Viele halten „Breaking the Waves“ bis heute für Lars von Triers stärksten Film. Er war der erste Preisträger des vor zehn Jahren erstmals bei den Nordischen Filmtagen vergebenen Kirchlichen Filmpreises Interfilm.

The early 1970s in a remote coastal village in Scotland. Deeply pious Bess marries globetrotting oil worker Jan in spite of the reservations of her parish elders. But their happiness is short-lived. Jan has to go out to the rig, and Bess’ prayers to God for his speedy return are answered when he is brought back paralysed by an occupational accident. Unable ever to be her lover again, he insists Bess should have sex with another. Bess is reluctant, but eventually succumbs and, in doing so, crosses the boundary into a world totally alien to her. Lars von Trier addresses unconditional love, guilt, sacrifice, redemption and miracle in this complex drama full of unexpected twists. Emily Watson’s outstanding performance as Bess catapulted her to international fame. “Breaking the Waves” is widely regarded as Lars von Trier’s most powerful film. It was the first to win the Interfilm Church Prize when it was introduced ten years ago at the Nordic Film Days.

Regisseur Lars von Trier, geboren 1956, machte 1983 seinen Abschluss an der Dänischen Filmhochschule. Er ist einer der gefeiertesten und umstrittensten Regisseure der Gegenwart. Seinen Ruhm begründete er mit der Europa-Trilogie „The Element of Crime“ (1984), „Epidemic“ (1987) und „Europa“ (1991). 1992 gründete er zusammen mit Peter Aalbæck Jensen die Produktionsfirma Zentropa Entertainments. 1995 spielte Lars von Trier die zentrale Rolle bei der Entwicklung des Dogma 95 Manifests, das Filmemacher weltweit beeinflusst hat. Sein eigener Beitrag zu Dogma war der Film „Idioten“ (1998), der mit „Breaking the Waves“ (1996) und „Dancer in the Dark“ (2000), dem Gewinner der Goldenen Palme in Cannes, die Golden-Heart-Trilogie bildet. „Manderlay“ ist nach „Dogville“ (2003) der zweite Film der geplanten Trilogie „USA – Land of Opportunities“.

Director Lars von Trier, born in 1956, graduated in 1983 from the Danish Film School. He is one of today’s most celebrated and controversial directors. He came to fame with his Europa trilogy “The Element of Crime” (1984), “Epidemic” (1987) and “Europa” (1991). In 1992, together with Peter Aalbæck Jensen, he founded the production company Zentropa Entertainments. In 1995, Lars von Trier was the driving force behind the development of the Dogma 95 Manifesto that has influenced filmmakers throughout the world. His own contribution to Dogma was the film “The Idiots” (1998), which, together with “Breaking the Waves” (1996) and his Palme d’Or-winning “Dancer in the Dark” (2000), forms part of the “Golden Heart” trilogy. “Manderlay” follows “Dogville” (2003) as the second in his planned trilogy “USA – Land of Opportunities”.
