Inhalt/ Summary

Prof. Willy Sommerfeld ist mit 100 Jahren der dienstälteste aktive Stummfilmpianist weltweit. Er hat die Anfänge des Films am Piano miterlebt, seine Rückkehr zum stummen Kino in den 70er Jahren machte ihn deutschlandweit zur Legende. Der Film will den „Titan der Filmgeschichte“, wie Ulrich Gregor ihn genannt hat, nun auch dem Publikum weltweit vorstellen. Im Film wie auch in der Realität weicht Sommerfeld seiner seit über 40 Jahren besseren Hälfte Doris nicht von der Seite, und Sohn Sebastian kommentiert das Leben mit einem Fossil – mit wechselndem Humor. Filmsequenzen aus bekannten, weniger bekannten und vergessenen Stummfilmen, zum Teil neu zusammengesetzt, verbildlichen den Weg des heute letzten authentischen Stummfilmpianisten der 20er Jahre.

100-year-old Prof. Willy Sommerfeld is the world’s longest-serving silent movie pianist. He was accompanying silent movies live on the piano in the early days of film and his comeback in the 1970s made him a living legend in Germany. This film aims to introduce the man described by Ulrich Gregor as a “Titan of film history” to a broader international audience. In the film, as in real life, Sommerfeld rarely leaves the side of Doris, to whom he has been married for more than 40 years. His son Sebastian also tells of life with this “relic” of film history, with wry humour. Footage from famous, obscure and even long-forgotten silent movies illustrates the career of the last silent movie pianist of the 1920s.

Regisseurin Ilona Ziok, in Polen geboren, wuchs in England, Deutschland und Frankreich auf. Sie studierte Film, Theater und Politik in Frankfurt, New York und Moskau. 1989 Promotion. Redaktions- und Regietätigkeit für den Hessischen Rundfunk. Seit 1990 eigene Produktionsfirma. Heute lebt und arbeitet sie in Berlin und in New York, wo am Broadway auf der Grundlage ihres international preisgekrönten Films „Kurt Gerrons Karussell” ein Musical entsteht, an dem sie als Autorin mitwirkt.

Director Ilona Ziok, born in Poland, grew up in England, Germany and France. She studied film, theatre and politics in Frankfurt, New York and Moscow, receiving a doctorate in 1989. She has worked in promotion, editing and directing for German broadcasting company Hessischer Rundfunk and set up her own production company in 1990. Today she lives and works in Berlin and New York. A Broadway musical, for which she is involved in writing the script, is currently being developed on the basis of her internationally award-winning film “Kurt Gerron’s Karussell”.
