Inhalt/ Summary

Auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Popularität entscheidet sich der engagierte Fernsehjournalist Tomas Stockman gegen die Karriere und für die Familie. Mit Ehefrau und Sohn zieht er zurück in das Dorf, aus dem er stammt und wo er nun im familiären Betrieb und an der Seite seines Bruders Peter das sauberste Quellwasser der Welt abfüllen will. Die Wohlfahrt des Dorfes aber, um die es ihm dabei auch geht, gerät in Gefahr. Denn bald belegen Tests eine schwere Belastung des Wassers durch Pestizide. Tomas will die Ergebnisse öffentlich machen, doch nicht nur Peter stellt sich, aus Furcht vor dem Bankrott, gegen ihn – bald steht Tomas Stockman in seinen Kampf für die Wahrheit allein gegen alle. Als Umweltthriller und Familiendrama hat Erik Skjoldbjærg seine moderne Ibsen-Verfilmung angelegt. Vor der Kulisse der zerklüfteten Westküste Norwegens werden zugleich auch die Abgründe des lokalen Gemeinwesens deutlich. Und so modern wie die Sprache ist auch das Konzept dieses Films, der mit seinem letzten Dialogsatz – „Ich schaffe es nicht allein” – Ibsens Figur des Autokraten letztlich demontiert.

At the height of his popularity, politically committed television journalist Tomas Stockman decides to give up his career to devote himself to his family. He returns with his wife and son to his childhood village, where he plans to join his brother Peter in the family business bottling the world’s purest spring water. But the welfare of the village, which he hopes to enhance with his enterprise, is threatened. Tests show that the water is heavily contaminated by pesticides. Tomas wants to go public with the findings, but Peter, fearing bankruptcy, opposes him – and he’s not the only one. Soon, Tomas Stockman finds himself fighting his battle for truth alone. Erik Skjoldbjærg’s contemporary take on Ibsen is an eco-thriller and family drama set against the rugged backdrop of Norway’s west coast, where the darker side of the local community spirit reveals itself. Not only the language has been updated here. The concept has, too, lends the lie to Ibsen’s autocratic figure, culminating in his final words: “I can’t do it alone.“

Regisseur Erik Skjoldbjærg wurde 1964 in Tromsø geboren. Er studierte an der renommierten National Film and Televison School in London. 1997 war sein Regiedebüt „Insomnia” (NFL 2004) ein großer Erfolg bei Publikum und Kritik. Beim „Festival du Film d’Action et d’Aventures” im französischen Valenciennes gewann Skjoldbjærg den Großen Preis der Jury sowie den Regiepreis. Während eines Aufenthalts in den USA verfilmte Skjoldbjærg Elizabeth Wurtzels Roman „Prozac Nation: Young and Depressed in America” mit Christina Ricci in der Hauptrolle. Sein jüngster Film „Ein Volksfeind“ lief 2005 als Eröffnungsfilm beim Internationalen Filmfestival in Tromsø.

Director Erik Skjoldbjærg was born in 1964 in Tromsø and studied at the National Film and Televison School in London. His 1997 directing debut “Insomnia” (NFL 2004) was a huge success with audiences and critics alike, winning for Skjoldbjærg both the Grand Prix du Jury and Best Director awards at the “Festival du Film d’Action et d’Aventures” in Valenciennes. While in the USA Skjoldbjærg filmed an adaptation of Elizabeth Wurtzel’s novel “Prozac Nation: Young and Depressed in America” starring Christina Ricci. His latest film “Enemy of the People” was the opening film at the International Film Festival in Tromsø.
