Inhalt/ Summary

Jed und Chloe arbeiten in einer Fabrik in Schottland. Die beiden sind jung, verliebt – und ziemlich naiv. Als Chloes Katze durch einen Unfall zu Tode kommt, glaubt sie den Sinn des Lebens verloren und fällt in Schweigen. Verzweifelt begibt sich Jed auf die Suche nach etwas, das Chloe helfen kann – etwas, das dem Leben eine Bedeutung verleiht, eine Antwort. Die erhofft er sich von dem eigenbrötlerischen Schrotthändler Max: Jed zieht bei ihm ein und quält ihn fortan mit der Frage: „Was ist der Sinn des Lebens?" Max weiß das selbst nicht so genau, weil er eine tragische Geschichte zu erzählen hat. Regisseur Fridrik Thór Fridriksson zeigt sich in Bestform: „Niceland“ ist Märchen, Liebesgeschichte, Buddymovie, Drama und Komödie zugleich. Mit atemberaubender Sicherheit, einem ruhigen, poetischen Erzählstil sowie wunderschön melancholischen Bildern zieht uns Fridriksson in seinen Bann. Nicht zuletzt fasziniert der englischsprachige Film mit seiner internationalen Besetzung: Gary Lewis („Billy Elliott“, „Gangs of New York“), Kerry Fox („Intimacy“) und Martin Compston („Sweet Sixteen“).

Jed and Chloe work in a factory somewhere in Scotland. They are young, in love – and a bit naive. When Chloe’s cat dies in an accident, she thinks there is no longer any point to life, and falls into silence. Jed desperately seeks something, anything, that could bring some meaning back to her life. Hoping that Max the scrap merchant can provide the answer, Jed moves in with him and torments him with the question: “What is the meaning of life?”. Max isn’t too sure about that himself, and has his own tragic tale to tell. Director Fridrik Thór Fridriksson is in top form in his latest film. “Niceland” is a fairytale, a love story, a buddy movie, a drama and a comedy. Its remarkable clarity, quietly lyrical narrative and beautifully melancholy images are utterly enchanting. Filmed in English with an excellent international cast: Gary Lewis (“Billy Elliott”, “Gangs of New York”), Kerry Fox (“Intimacy”) and Martin Compston (“Sweet Sixteen”).

Fridrik Thór Fridriksson, geboren 1954 in Reykjavik, ist der bekannteste Regisseur und Produzent Islands. Sein erster Spielfilm „Weiße Wale“ wurde 1987 mit der Lübecker „Filmlinse“ ausgezeichnet, dem heutigen Publikumspreis der „Lübecker Nachrichten“. Sein zweiter Spielfilm „Children of Nature - Eine Reise“ erhielt 23 internationale Preise, eine Oscar-Nominierung und in Lübeck den Preis der Nordischen Filminstitute. Für „Movie Days“ erhielt er 1994 bei den NFL den Ehrenpreis der Baltischen Filmschaffenden. Bei den NFL 2000 wurde Fridrikssons „Angels of the Universe“ gezeigt, ein Film, den ein Viertel der isländischen Bevölkerung in den Kinos sah. Als Produzent hat Fridriksson mit der Icelandic Film Corporation vielen Regietalenten den Weg gebahnt. Zuletzt war er 2002 mit „Falken“ auf den Nordischen Filmtagen Lübeck vertreten.

Fridrik Thór Fridriksson, born in Reykjavik in 1954, is one of Iceland’s leading directors and producers. “White Whales”, his feature debut, was awarded the Lübeck Film Lens in 1987, now called the Audience Prize of the Lübecker Nachrichten. His second feature “Börn natturunnar” (“Children of Nature”, 1991) received 23 international awards, including the Nordic Film Institutes Prize in Lübeck, where “Movie Days” went on to receive the Baltic Films Prize in 1994. Fridiksson’s “Angels of the Universe” was screened at the NFL 2000 and was seen in cinemas by a quarter of Iceland’s population. As producer Fridriksson have not only realised his own films at his production company Icelandic Film Corporation, but paved the way for the careers of many talented young directors. He was most recently at the NFL in 2002 with “Falcons”.
