Inhalt/ Summary

Wer assoziiert schon eine Müllkippe mit einem Schlaraffenland? In der Regel werden Müllkippen immer als etwas Widerwärtiges und Abstoßendes dargestellt. Doch auch eine Mülldeponie ist ein Lebensraum. Ein wahres Schlaraffenland für viele Geschöpfe, das seinen Bewohnern das ganze Jahr hindurch Nahrung und Wärme liefert. Auf den Müllkippen von Getlini und Riga in Lettland kann man etwa 100 verschiedene Vogelarten beobachten. Sowohl im Winter als auch im Sommer sorgen bis zu 9.000 Silbermöwen für einen ohrenbetäubenden Lärm. Stammgäste der Mülldeponie sind auch die Tauben, Spatzen und Dohlen. Und wenn es Abend wird, schlägt die Stunde der Waldtiere: Wühlmäuse, Zwergmäuse, Rehe und Füchse kehren ein. Dem Zuschauer ermöglicht dieser Film einen Blick auf eine Umgebung, die sämtliche Vorurteile und Aversionen gegenüber Müllkippen zerstört: Geheimnisvolle im Nebel verhüllte Landschaften, traumhafte Lichtspiele der Nachmittagssonnenstrahlen nach dem Gewitter...

A rubbish tip as the land of milk and honey? Most people think of rubbish dumps as pretty unsavoury places. But a rubbish tip is a microcosm – a land of milk and honey, indeed, for many creatures who find nourishment and warmth there all year round. Some 100 different bird species can be found on the rubbish tips of Getlini and Riga in Latvia. Winter and summer, as many as 9,000 seagulls fill the air with their screeching. Pigeons, sparrows and jackdaws are regulars here. And when evening falls, the voles, harvest mice, deer and foxes come out. Poetically shrouded in mist, or suffused by the dreamy afternoon sunlight following a thunderstorm, this film reveals an environment that lends the lie to our prejudices and aversions as far as rubbish tips are concerned.

Laila Pakalnina wurde 1962 in Liepaja, Lettland, geboren. 1986 graduierte sie als Fernsehjournalistin an der Moskauer Universität und nahm im Anschluss ein Filmstudium an der Moskauer Filmhochschule VGIK auf, das sie 1991 abschloss. Seit 1988 hat sie eine ganze Reihe von Kurz- und Dokumentarfilmen gedreht. Als Spielfilmregisseurin debütierte sie 1998 mit „Der Schuh“, einer deutsch-lettischen Koproduktion. Ihr zweiter Spielfilm, „Der Python“, lief 2003 als lettischer Beitrag im Controcorrente-Wettbewerb von Venedig und bei den Nordischen Filmtagen Lübeck.

Laila Pakalnina was born in 1962 in Liepaja, Latvia. In 1986 she graduated in television journalism from Moscow University and then took up film studies at the Moscow VGIK film school, graduating in 1991. She has made a number of short films and documentaries since 1988. Her feature film debut was “The Shoe”, a German-Latvian co-production. Her second feature film, “The Python”, was the Latvian contribution to the Controcorrente competition at Venice in 2003 and was shown at the Nordic Film Days Lübeck that year.
