12.000 Letten arbeiten in Irland. Einige von ihnen, die hier in einem Monat soviel zu verdienen hoffen wie zu Hause in einem Jahr, erläutern ihre Beweggründe und ihre Lebenssituation. „Niemand will Rumänen haben, und die Polen sind genauso übel wie die Tschechen. Die sind alle nicht so wie die Letten – arbeitswillig, ohne dabei auf die Stunden zu achten“, erklärt einer von ihnen, ein Erntehelfer, dessen Tag morgens früh um fünf Uhr beginnt. In Lettland verfallen derweil die Höfe, obwohl auch dort das Leben nur aus Arbeit besteht. Hier aber wird sie bezahlt. Doch es ist harte Arbeit, die die Letten hier kriegen, und nicht jeder wäre gekommen, hätte er das vorher gewusst. 14 bis 15 Stunden dauert der Arbeitstag einer Hotelangestellten, die von sich selbst sagt, sie arbeite für vier. Einer nennt Irland „Sibirien“ – die meisten fühlen sich ausgenutzt in der Fremde. Darum zeichnen sie auch ein wenig schmeichelhaftes Bild ihres Gastgeberlandes, in dem sie nicht heimisch werden wollen und aus dem sie sich in die Heimat sehnen: Überall ist es besser, wo wir nicht sind.

12,000 Latvians work in Ireland. Some of them, hoping to earn as much there in a month as they could at home in a year, describe their motivation and their situation. “Nobody wants Romanians and the Poles are bad as well as the Czechs. You’ll never find anyone like the Latvians – ready to work, never mind the hours,” says one of them – a harvest helper who starts work at five in the morning. In Latvia, the farms are falling into a state of neglect, though even there life is all work. At least they get paid for it in Ireland. But it is the hard work that the Latvians get, and not everybody would have made the journey if they had known just how hard it would be. We see a hotel worker doing 15 hour shifts – and, as she says, doing the work of four. Another calls Ireland Siberia – most of them feel exploited. Hardly a flattering image of the host country in which they feel unwelcome, and where they long for home.

Regisseurin Una Celma studierte in Lettland Jura, ehe sie in Moskau die Filmhochschule VGIK besuchte. 1985-87 arbeitete sie als Continuity-Assistentein im Filmstudio Riga, für das sie 1989-91 auch als Regisseurin tätig war. Seit 1992 arbeitete sie freischaffend u.a. für das Schwedische Fernsehen, den BBC World Service und für den lettischen Privatsender NTV-5 sowie für unabhängige Filmproduzenten. Ihr Spielfilm „Follow Me“ war bei den NFL 1999 zu sehen.

Director Una Celma studied law in Latvia before attending the VGIK Film School in Moscow. From 1985-87 she worked as a continuity assistant at Filmstudio Riga, and from 1989-91 as director as well. She has worked freelance since 1992 for Swedish Television, BBC World Service and Latvian private channel NTV-5 as well as for a number of independent film producers. Her feature film “Follow Me” was screened at the NFL 1999.
