Ágúst Gudmundsson Komödie „On Top“ ist in Island geradezu legendär. Auch mehr als 20 Jahre nach seiner Fertigstellung rangiert er auf der Liste der in Island beliebtesten Filme ganz weit oben. Im Mittelpunkt des beschwingten Pop-Musicals steht eine Rock-Band die es auf dem kleinen einheimischen Musikmarkt mit einer unerwarteten Konkurrenz zu tun bekommt: einer isländischen All-Girl-Combo! Dass der musikalische Geschlechterkampf um einen Spitzenplatz in den Charts und den Herzen der Fans mit einigem Getöse vonstatten geht, liegt in der Natur der Sache. Regisseur Águst Gudmundsson tritt übrigens in einer kleinen Rolle als Norweger auf. Dass auch für ihn dieser unbeschwerte Filmspaß unvergesslich war, konnte man am Rande der diesjährigen Filmfestspiele in Cannes erfahren. Dort meldete die Fachzeitschrift „Variety”, dass Gudmundsson an einer Fortsetzung seines Film-Hits arbeitet. „In Tune with the Times” wird von einer Band erzählen, die sich vor 20 Jahren aufgelöst hat, nun aber vor ihrer Wiedervereinigung steht. Ágúst Gudmundsson’s comedy “On Top” is legendary in Iceland. Even twenty years on, it still tops the lists of Iceland’s all-time favourite films by a long shot. At the heart of this feel-good pop-musical is a rock band that comes up against some unexpected competition on the local musical market: an Icelandic all-girl line-up. Needless to say, this musical battle of the sexes to win the hearts of the fans causes uproar. Director Ágúst Gudmundsson appears in a cameo role as a Norwegian. It still has a special place in his heart, too, as he indicated at this year’s film festival in Cannes, where Variety magazine announced that he was working on a sequel. “In Tune with the Times” will be about a band that split up twenty years ago and is about to have a reunion. Let the old times roll!

Águst Gudmundsson wurde 1947 in Reykjavik geboren. Dort studierte er Isländisch und Französisch. Er absolvierte eine Schauspielausbildung und an der National Film School in London ein Regiestudium. In Island arbeitete er zunächst fürs Fernsehen, 1980 konnte er als Regisseur und Produzent den seinen ersten Spielfilm realisieren: „Land und Söhne”. Der Film markiert den Beginn der isländischen Spielfilmproduktion. Sein zweiter Film, „Der Geächtete – Die Gisli-Saga” (1981), war ein großer internationaler Erfolg, die Politsatire „Goldsand” wurde bei den NFL 1985 mit der „Lübecker Filmlinse” ausgezeichnet. Für „Der Tanz” (1998) erhielt Gudmundsson den Regiepreis beim Festival in Moskau. Daneben hat er Fernsehprojekte realisiert, u.a. mit dem ZDF 1988 die sechsteilige Weihnachtsserie „Nonni und Manni”.

Director Águst Gudmundsson was born in Reykjavik, where he went on to study Icelandic and French. He trained as an actor at the National Drama School and also attended the National Film School in London. He worked in Iceland in television and directed and produced his first feature film with his company Isfilm in 1980: “Land and Sons” put Iceland as a film nation on the map. His second film “Outlaw – The Saga of Gisli” was a big international hit, and the political satire “Golden Sands” (1984) won the Lübeck Film Lense in 1985. For “The Dance” (1998) he was named Best Director at Moscow. Apart from scriptwriting and directing feature films, he has also realised a number of television projects which were also broadcast abroad, including, with ZDF, the six-part Christmas series “Nonni and Manni”.
