Inhalt/ Summary

„Bázo“ ist ein samisches Wort für „Idiot“. Der hier so bezeichnet wird, wirkt zwar nicht ganz helle, hat am Ende aber alle Trümpfe in der Hand. Zwar kann Emil, der noch als Erwachsener auf dem Hof seines Vaters lebt, weder lesen noch schreiben, aber dumm ist er nicht. Als sein im Ausland erfolgreicher Bruder Kenneth bei einem Unfall ums Leben kommt, soll er dessen Besitztümer nach Hause bringen. Doch von denen scheint nichts mehr übrig zu sein. Stattdessen muss Emil überraschend Kenneths kleinen Sohn in Obhut nehmen. Mit ihm macht sich er auf den Weg zu Kenneths finnischer Ex-Freundin Susanna, von der er Dinge erfährt, die ein ganz neues Licht auf den tödlichen „Unfall“ werfen. Emils nördlich des Polarkreises spielende Odyssee führt durch Norwegen, Finnland und Schweden. „Bázo“ ist ein samisches Roadmovie mit Krimi-Appeal, das die Schattenseiten des Lebens in diesen arktischen Breiten, wie Alkoholismus und Korruption, nicht verschweigt. Nicht zuletzt die glänzenden Darstellerleistungen von Sverre Porsanger (als Emil) und Anitta Suikkari (als Susanna) machen es sehenswert.

“Bázo” is a Sami word for “idiot”. The person they call Bázo may not exactly seem a bright spark, but he does come out on top. Emil, still living on his parents’ farm as an adult, can neither read nor write. But he is not stupid. When his successful brother Kenneth dies in an accident across the border, Emil is sent to bring his possessions back home. There seems to be nothing left of them. Instead, Emil ends up looking after Kenneth’s young son. Together, they set out to visit Kenneth’s Finnish ex-girlfriend Susanna, who sheds new light on the fatal “accident”. Emil’s odyssey within the Arctic Circle takes him to Norway, Finland and Sweden. “Bázo” is a Sami road movie with a touch of the detective thriller, and doesn’t hide the dark side of life in the far north, with its alcoholism and corruption. Brilliant performances by Sverre Porsanger (as Emil) and Anitta Suikkari (as Susanna) make this a film worth watching.

Regisseur Lars Göran Petterson durchlief eine Ausbildung zum Cutter und Produzenten beim Schwedischen Fernsehen, für das er, hauptsächlich in Örebro, fast zwanzig Jahre lang arbeitete. 1989 machte er sich selbstständig und gründete seine eigene Produktionsfirma Film Form AB. Seither hat er als freischaffender Regisseur sowohl Spiel- als auch Dokumentarfilme entwickelt und inszeniert.

Director Lars Göran Petterson trained as a cutter and producer in Swedish television, a medium he worked in for almost twenty years, mainly in Örebro. Since setting up his own production company Film Form AB in 1989, he has developed feature films and documentaries as a freelance director.
