Film-Mogule?
 
Gibt es sie überhaupt unter den skandinavischen Filmproduzenten? Der norwegische Produzent John M. Jacobsen, befragt nach der Bedeutung des „M.“ in seinem Namen, antwortete schlicht: „Mogul“! Ob die anderen in der Retrospektive vertretenen Produzenten – Jörn Donner (Finnland) , Katinka Faragó (Schweden) und Per Holst (Dänemark) – diesen Anspruch wohl teilen? Über die Bedeutung und die Funktion eines Produzenten ist sich das große Publikum zumeist nicht klar.

Der Produzent – das unbekannte Wesen. Zu Unrecht. Er steht zwar weder vor noch hinter der Filmkamera – aber er hat doch alles im Blick und vor allem im Griff. Denn er hat das Sagen und das Geld, heißt es. Ohne ihn bliebe jedes Filmprojekt nur ein Projekt. Er kann jungen Talenten eine Chance geben, oder auch nicht. Er bestimmt den Regisseur, hat die Gesamtkontrolle über die Filmproduktion. Auch beim Film hängt eben alles am Geld. Sind die Produzenten also die unbekannten Allmächtigen hinter den Kulissen? Die Porträts der vier führenden skandinavischen Produzenten aus vier skandinavischen Ländern geben vielleicht keine Antwort, aber einen Einblick in ihre Arbeit im Dschungel zwischen Kommerz und Filmförderung. Sie stehen für Filme wie „Tic Tac“, „Pelle, der Eroberer“, „Fanny und Alexander“, „Pathfinder“, „Sonntagskinder“, „Ich bin Dina“, „Auf der Jagd nach dem Nierenstein“ oder „Nur Wolken bewegen die Sterne“ – Spielfilme, Animationen, Kinderfilme, die ganze Palette des nordischen Kinos.

Von den Hunderten Filmen, die dank dieser Produzenten auf die Leinwand kamen, kann die Retrospektive der Nordischen Filmtage Lübeck selbstverständlich nur einen Ausschnitt zeigen (einige in der Retrospektive Kinderfilme). Aber es sollte ein Ausschnitt sein, der dem Gesamtwerk und dem Selbstverständnis der Produzenten gerecht wird. Wir danken Jörn Donner, Katinka Faragó, Per Holst und John M. Jacobsen, dass sie ihre eigene Auswahl selber getroffen haben.

Film Moguls?
 
Is there such a thing in the Scandinavian film industry? Norwegian producer John M. Jacobsen, when asked what the initial “M” in his name stood for, quipped “Mogul”! Would the other producers represented in the retrospective – Jörn Donner (Finland) , Katinka Faragó (Sweden) and Per Holst (Denmark) – share his view? The significance and function of a producer is often unclear to the average cinema-goer.

Producers are mysterious creatures, of whom little is known. And wrongly so. A producer doesn ’t stand in front of the camera, or even behind it – but he has an eye on everything that is going on and, above all, he has everything under control. It is said that the producer has the money – and the last word. Without him, a film project would remain just that – a project. He can give young talent a chance, or not, as the case may be. He chooses the director and has overall control of the film production. In film, as elsewhere, everything depends on money. Does this mean that the producers are the allpowerful unknowns behind the scenes?

The portraits of four leading Scandinavian producers from four Scandinavian countries may not answer that question, but they certainly give an insight into their work in the jungle of commerce and film funding. They are responsible for such films as “Tic Tac”, “Pelle the Conqueror”, “Fanny and Alexander”, “Pathfinder”, “Sunday’s Children”, “I am Dina”, “Chasing the Kidneystone” and “Only Clouds Move the Stars” – features, animations, children’s films, and indeed the entire range of Nordic cinema.

Needless to say, the Nordic Film Days Lübeck can show only a fraction of the hundreds of films (some in the retrospective children’s films) that have been created thanks to these producers. However, the selection shown here aims to showcase the oeuvre and the distinctive profile of each. We wish to thank Jörn Donner, Katinka Faragó, Per Holst and John M. Jacobsen for making their own selection.
