Intensive Zeit
 
Im Rückblick auf die vergangenen Nordischen Filmtage Lübeck sehen wir eine intensive Zeit voller bedeutsamer Ereignissen. Nicht nur im Bereich Film, sondern auch bezüglich der Zukunft Lettlands im Allgemeinen. Ein solches Ereignis war zweifellos das Referendum vom 20. September, als die Mehrheit der lettischen Wähler für die Mitgliedschaft in der EU stimmte.
Mit großer Genugtuung können wir die Filmindustrie Lettlands als ein aktives Mitglied der europäischen Filmindustrie bezeichnen. Die internationale Zusammenarbeit wächst - wir sind bei immer mehr Festivals vertreten, an immer mehr Koproduktionen beteiligt und bei vielen weiteren internationalen Projekten dabei.
Die Besucherzahlen in Lettland für heimische Filme steigen. Um nur ein Beispiel zu nennen: Der Dokumentarfilm "Found in America" spielte zwei Monaten lang in ausverkauften Kinos. Dieser Film erzählte von jungen Menschen in Lettland, die dem amerikanischen Traum nachgehen, und wurde ohne staatliche Subventionen produziert.
Leider sind unsere Versuche, die lettische Regierung von der Notwendigkeit einer großzügigeren Unterstützung der Filmproduktion zu überzeugen, fehlgeschlagen. In diesem Jahr bietet Lettland ein interessantes und vielseitiges Programm in Lübeck. Die Themenbreite zeugt davon, dass die lettische Filmproduktion durchaus über ihren eigenen Tellerrand schauen kann.
Die beiden Dokumentarfilme "Mein ganzes Leben" und "Der Mann vom Dach" handeln vom heutigen Lettland. Der erste zeichnet die gegenwärtigen Probleme eines Landes an der Schwelle zur EU - Toleranz und unser Bild des Anderen. Der zweite spricht von dem Mut und der Risikobereitschaft, höher zu steigen als der Durchschnittsmensch, um die Welt von oben zu betrachten.
Unser Meister des Dokumentarfilms, Herz Frank, hat in "Flashback" die Kamera auf sich selbst gerichtet und enthüllt die innere Welt des Individuums im weitesten Sinne. Um das Geheimnis "Frau" zu lüften, ist die bekannte Künstlerin Signe Baumane von ihrer Wahlheimat New York nach Riga zurückgekehrt, um ihren Animationsfilm zu machen. Regisseur Laila Pakalnina in "Der Python" bietet eine filmische Sprache und Form, die bereits beim Filmfestival in Venedig viel Aufmerksamkeit auf sich gezogen hat.
Wir hoffen, dass diese Filme ein interessiertes Publikum in Lübeck finden werden und dass sie die Basis für einen Ideenaustausch und professionelle Kooperation bilden werden.

Intensive Time
 
Looking back at the time since the last Nordic Film Days in Lübeck we can see that it has been intensive and full of significant events. Not only regarding filmmaking but the future of Latvia in general. One of those events undoubtedly is the Referendum of September 20 when the majority of Latvia's electorate voted for joining the European Union.
It is with great satisfaction that we can see the filmmaking branch of Latvia as an active member of the European film industry. The international co-operation is growing - we participate in more and more festivals, we enter more and more co-productions and participate in various other international projects.
The number of viewers for domestic films is also increasing in Latvia. Just one example - a documentary "Found in America" was screened in a cinema for two months and the auditorium was full all the time. This film telling about young people in Latvia searching for the aim of life in America has been produced without state financing. Unfortunately our attempts to persuade the Government of Latvia that filmmaking deserves increased state support have failed so far.
This year Latvia offers an interesting and versatile five film programme at the Nordic Film Days. The variety of themes covered by the films certifies that Latvian filmmaking is not locked up in its own small world.
Two documentaries "For All My Life" and "The Roof Man" are about Latvia today. The first treats topical problems of Latvia on the threshold of the EU - tolerance and our attitude towards others. The second is on the daring spirit, courage and risk involved in living above than the rest of us, and looking down upon the world from on high.
In "Flashback", Herz Frank, our master of documentary filmmaking, has turned the camera towards his own self and discloses the inner world of the human being both literally and figuratively.
In order to disclose the secret called "Woman" the well known artist Signe Baumane came from her home in New York to her home in Riga to make her animation film. The director Laila Pakalnina in "The Python" offers a film language and form that already attracted the attention of the Venice Film Festival.
We hope that these films will find their interested audience in Lübeck and will serve as basis for an exchange of ideas and co-operation between the professionals.
