Brückenbau...
 
...ist eine Meisterleistung der Technik, eine Herausforderung der Politik, eine Notwendigkeit der Kunst. Brücken zu bauen war schon immer das Ziel der Nordischen Filmtage Lübeck: Ging es in den Anfangsjahren darum, im Zeichen der Aussöhnung und Verständigung die Verbindungen zu den Nachbarn im Norden neu zu knüpfen, so setzte die Einbeziehung baltischer Filme in das Festivalprogramm im Jahr 1989, also noch vor der Staatsgründung Estlands, Lettlands und Litauens, ein Signal zur politischen und künstlerischen Integration.
In diesem Jahr spannen die Nordischen Filmtage Lübeck geografisch einen weiten Bogen von Grönland über die nordischen und baltischen Länder bis Russland, dem wir in Kooperation mit dem Festival des osteuropäischen Films in Cottbus ein Fenster öffnen.
Programmatisch reicht der Bogen von packenden Spielfilmen über Kurz- und Animationsfilme zu herausragenden Dokumentationen, von wieder entdeckten Klassikern zu brandneuen Produktionen in deutscher oder internationaler Erstaufführung.
Das Festival vereint aber auch die Generationen mit einem Wettbewerbsprogramm, das gekennzeichnet ist durch außergewöhnlich viele starke Debüts und einer Retrospektive, die einigen der bedeutendsten Produzenten Nordeuropas gewidmet ist.
Wie sie es verstanden haben, den Brückenschlag zwischen künstlerischen Ambitionen und wirtschaftlichem Erfolg zu meistern, zielt auch das Festival darauf, ein breites Publikum für außergewöhnliche Filme zu begeistern. Der Publikumspreis der Lübecker Nachrichten, der in diesem Jahr zum 25. Mal vergeben wird, ist ein sichtbares Zeichen.
Die Nordischen Filmtage Lübeck sind aber gleichzeitig auch ein wichtiger Branchentreffpunkt: Festivalveranstalter und Einkäufer finden hier Beiträge für ihr Programm, und wichtige Organisationen und Institutionen der Filmbranche nutzen und bereichern das Festival, in dem sie Seminare und Diskussionsforen anbieten.
Andere Partner unterstützen das Festival finanziell und beweisen, dass es sich lohnt, in Brückenbau zu investieren. Willy Brandt, der große deutsche Politiker, hat den Brückenschlag zum Norden und Osten Europas verkörpert. Er steht im Mittelpunkt von zwei herausragenden Produktionen unseres Medienpartners NDR, die das Festival zu Ehren seines 90. Geburtstags präsentiert.
Es lohnt sich nach Lübeck zu kommen. Die Brücken sind gespannt.

Building Bridges
 
Technological masterwork, political challenge, artistic necessity: building bridges has always been the aim of the Nordic Film Days Lübeck. In the early years, it was all about forging links between the neighbours of the north in the spirit of reconciliation and détente. In 1989, with the inclusion of Baltic films in the festival programme - even before the states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were founded - it was all about political and artistic integration.
This year, the Nordic Film Days Lübeck span a broad arc from Greenland, across the Nordic and Baltic countries, all the way to Russia, on which a new window opens thanks to our collaboration with the Festival of Eastern European Film in Cottbus.
This year's programme ranges from gripping feature films to short films, animations and outstanding documentaries, from rediscovered classics to the German and international premieres of some brand new productions.
What is more, the festival also bridges the generation gap with a competition programme that includes an unusually high number of strong debut works and a retrospective dedicated to some of Northern Europe's most influential producers.
Just as they have succeeded in building a bridge between creative ambition and economic success, so too does it aim to bring together a wide audience in the appreciation of outstanding and extraordinary films. The Lübecker Nachrichten Audience Prize, which is being awarded this year for the 25th time, bears tangible witness to this.
At the same time, however, the Nordic Film Days Lübeck form an important meeting point for all areas of the industry: festival organisers and distributors find films here to suit their programmes, while important cinematic organisations and institutions use the event to host seminars and discussion panels that enrich the life of the festival as a whole.
Still others lend the festival their financial support and, in doing so, prove that bridge-building is a worthwhile investment. The great German statesman Willy Brandt was the personification of bridge-building in Northern and Eastern Europe. He is the focus of two excellent productions by our media partner NDR, which the festival is presenting in honour of the 90th anniversary of his birth.
Lübeck is certainly worth a visit. The bridges are there to be crossed.
