Er fasziniert und provoziert. Er stellt die Filmkunst radikal in Frage und erfindet sie jedes Mal neu. Er zieht sich zurück und dominiert doch alle Diskussionen. In diesem Jahr ist er so präsent wie nie – auch bei den Nordischen Filmtagen Lübeck. Drei Filme des Programms hat er inszeniert oder initiiert: Lars von Trier. Das Festival präsentiert zum Auftakt seinen (parallel im deutschen Kino anlaufenden) neuen, in Cannes hochgelobten und dennoch umstrittenen Film Dogville. In Cannes führte dieses fast drei Stunden währende OEuvre die Kritikerliste der besten Filme des Festivals an; dennoch ging es bei den Juryentscheidungen leer aus. Amerikanische Kritiker meinten, eine antiamerikanische Tendenz darin entdecken zu können. Dogville ist alles andere als ein Dogma-Film. Das eigensinnige Werk, das den ersten Teil einer Amerika-Trilogie markiert, wurde in monatelanger Arbeit auf einer stilisierten, als Kleinstadt ausgestatteten Bühne im schwedischen Trollhättan auf Englisch gedreht. Ähnlich wie bei Breaking the Waves untersucht von Trier hier das Böse in der menschlichen Natur, in der er allerdings auch Gutes und Humorvolles entdeckt. In Dogville ist Nicole Kidman mal Opfer, mal Heilige, mal Racheengel. Lauren Bacall, Ben Gazzara, Stellan Skarsgård und andere Stars gehören zur hochkarätigen Besetzung. Was diese Schauspieler von den ungewöhnlichen Drehbedingungen und der Arbeit mit Lars von Trier hielten, kann man im Dokumentarfilmprogramm erfahren: Während der Dreharbeiten hat Regisseur Sami Saif in seinem Film Dogville Confessions ihre Begeisterung, ihre Frustration und ihre Verzweiflung in einem „Beichthäuschen“ eingefangen und ungewohnt intime Aussagen von Lars von Trier festgehalten.

He fascinates and provokes. He radically challenges traditional film art and invents it all anew. He withdraws into himself and dominates all discussions. This year he is more present than ever – and at the Nordic Film Days, as well. He directed or initiated three of the films here: Lars von Trier. The festival presents on the opening evening (parallel to its German release) his new, both highly acclaimed and controversial film Dogville. In Cannes this nearly three-hour oeuvre led the critics’ list of best films of the festival, but found no favour with the jury. American critics accused the film of anti-American sentiment. Dogville is anything but a Dogma film. In fact, it was filmed in English after months of preparation entirely on a stylised stage set in Trollhättan, Sweden, as the first part of his planned America trilogy. Similar to the approach in Breaking the Waves, von Trier examines the malevolent sides of human nature, while discovering at the same time positive and the humorous aspects. Nicole Kidman’s character is part victim, part saint and part avenging angel. The sterling cast features Lauren Bacall, Ben Gazzara, Stellan Skarsgård and many other international stars. What these performers thought about the unusual production conditions and their work with the sometimes tyrannical Lars von Trier is recorded in the documentary Dogville Confessions. Director Sami Saif interviewed them during the shoot in a specially constructed “Confession Box” and captured their enthusiasm, their frustation and their despair as well as unusually revealing statements by Lars von Trier.
