Hlemmur ist die zentrale Busstation von Reykjavik: Anlaufstelle für das soziale Elend der Stadt, für Alte, Kranke und Einsame – und deshalb auch der am meisten verachtete Ort der isländischen Hauptstadt. Regisseur Olafur Sveinsson hat es geschafft, die von Alkohol und Armut gezeichneten „Bewohner“ Hlemmurs zum Reden zu bringen: Unerwartet offen geben sie Einblick in die Eintönigkeit ihres Daseins, äußern sich über Hoffnungslosigkeit, Sucht und Not.Ein nüchterner Blick auf die Randexistenzen der isländischen Gesellschaft. Obwohl die dokumentarische Kamera ihre objektive Sichtweise niemals verlässt, gelingt es dem Film, eine erschütternde Anklage gegen verschwiegene Mechanismen des modernen Zusammenlebens zu formulieren.

Hlemmur is the central bus station in Reykjavik: a meeting place for the city's social outcasts, the sick and the lonely – which is why it is the most despised place in the Icelandic capital. Director Olafur Sveinsson has succeeded in getting the “inhabitants” of Hlemmur to talk. With unexpected candour, they tell of the monotony of their existence, their hopelessness, addiction and misery.A sober look at people on the margins of Icelandic society. Although the documentary camera never leaves its objective stance, the film manages to formulate a harrowing criticism of the unspoken mechanisms of modern society.

Regisseur Olafur Sveinsson, Jahrgang 1960, studierte Literatur und Philosophie an der Universität von Island. Dort gründete er auch ein Theater. 1993 veröffentlichte er einen Prosaband. Als Abschlussarbeit seines Studiums an der Berliner dffb drehte er den Dokumentarfilm „Nonstop“ über die Stammgäste einer 24-Stunden-Tankstelle in der deutschen Hauptstadt. „Endstation“ ist sein zweiter Film über Reykjavik. Sveinsson lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und der isländischen Hauptstadt.

Director Olafur Sveinsson, born in 1960, studied Literature and Philosophy at the University of Iceland. He also founded a theatre there. In 1993 he published a volume of prose. For his graduation work at the dffb in Berlin he made the documentary film “Nonstop” about the regular customers frequenting a 24-hour petrol station in the German capital. “Endstation” is his second film about Reykjavik. Sveinsson lives and works in Berlin and the Icelandic capital.
