Inhalt/ Summary

Selma, tschechische Immigrantin und alleinerziehende Mutter, arbeitet in einer amerikanischen Fabrik. Sie wird langsam blind. Dieses Schicksal droht auch ihrem Sohn Gene, wenn er nicht operiert wird. Das kostet aber sehr viel Geld, das Selma sich mühsam zusammen spart. Doch dann wird sie zu Unrecht des Diebstahls beschuldigt. Immer wenn ihr das Leben zu schwer wird, träumt sie vom Musical. Das Drama ihres Lebens eskaliert zu einem tragischen Finale. Von den Dreharbeiten mit der isländischen Sängerin Björk, der Hauptdarstellerin und Komponistin des Films, sagte Lars von Trier: „Keiner von uns hätte das auf sich genommen, wenn wir es vorher gewusst hätten.“ In Cannes erhielt Björk für ihre Darstellung in „Dancer in the Dark“ den Preis als beste Schauspielerin. Der Film wurde mit der Goldenen Palme ausgezeichnet. Zwei erfolgreiche skandinavische Filme, die bereits einen deutschen Verleih gefunden haben, gehören in diesem Jahr ebenfalls zum Programm der NFL 2000.

Selma, a Czech immigrant and single mother, has a job in a factory in America. She is gradually losing her eyesight. Her son Gene will suffer the same fate if he does not have an operation. The operation is expensive, and Selma doesn’t have the money. She dreams of becoming a musical star without a care in the world. But then she is accused of theft. The drama of her life escalates into a tragic finale. Speaking of singer Björk, who is the film’s leading lady and composer, Lars von Trier claimed: “Neither of us would have gone through with it if we had known what we were in for.” At the Cannes Film Festival this May Björk was named Best Actress for her role in “Dancer in the Dark”. The film was awarded the Palme d’Or. Two successful Scandinavian films which have already found a German distributor are part of the programme of the Nordic Film Days Lübeck 2000.
