Wir haben das Jubiläumsjahr 1998/1999 genutzt, um Bilanz zu ziehen. Was haben uns die Nordischen Filmtage - nun schon im 41. Jahr - gebracht, was schätzen unsere Zuschauer und die Professionellen der Branche so an diesem Festival, in welche Richtung sollen wir weitermachen? Wie kommt es, dass Jahr für Jahr immer mehr Zuschauer den Weg in den Filmpalast Stadthalle finden, während man skandinavische Filme in den deutschen Kinos wie die berühmte Stecknadel im Heuhaufen suchen muss? Diese Fragen beschäftigen uns immer noch - und wir sind gerade dabei, Antworten mit professionellen Mitteln herauszufinden.
Wir wissen, dass wir sehr treue Zuschauer haben, "Stammkunden", die Jahr für Jahr zurückkommen. Ebenso erfreulich ist die anhaltende Unterstützung der skandinavischen und baltischen Filminstitute, Regisseure, Produzenten und Verleiher, für die wir sehr dankbar sind. Die Nordischen Filmtage sind tatsächlich ein Schaufenster für nordische Filme in Deutschland und wahrscheinlich das bedeutendste Forum für skandinavische Filme außerhalb Skandinaviens überhaupt. Für die Hansestadt Lübeck sind sie das bedeutendste regelmäßige Kulturereignis.
Amerikanische Filme - schön und gut, aber was die Zuschauer an unserem Festival loben, ist gerade die andere Sicht der Drehbücher und der Kameras, der Blick auf die Menschen, auf unsere Nachbarn im Norden und Nordosten. Es kommt dabei vieles zusammen: der besondere ästhetische Reiz ihrer Filme, die Entdeckung neuer Talente, ungewöhnliche, unbequeme Erscheinungen wie Lars von Trier oder die Kaurismäki-Brüder. Man schätzt unsere familiäre und trotzdem nicht enge Atmosphäre. Auch bei steigenden Zuschauerzahlen können sich Gäste, Filmprofessionelle und Filmfans näherkommen und in einen persönlichen kulturellen Austausch eintreten.
Wir sind weiter bestrebt, Filme von hoher Qualität in einem würdigen internationalen Rahmen zu präsentieren. Für ihre Unterstützung dabei danken wir allen Besucherinnen und Besuchern. Wir danken unserem Medienpartner NDR und unseren Sponsoren sowie dem Freundeskreis der Nordischen Filmtage und nicht zuletzt der Presse.
Unseren treuen Anhängern, unseren neuen Zuschauern und unseren Gästen aus dem In- und Ausland wünsche ich viele angenehme Stunden im Kino und gute Begegnungen im Namen aller, die vor und hinter den Leinwänden am Gelingen der Nordischen Filmtage arbeiten.
 
 
The anniversary year 1998/1999 gave us an opportunity to take stock. What have we gained from the Nordic Film Days - now already in their 41st year -, what attracts our viewers and professionals in the field to this festival, and what direction should we take from here? Why is it that every year, more and more viewers find their way to the Filmpalast Stadthalle, whilst searching for Scandinavian films in German cinemas is like looking for the famous needle in a haystack? We are still investigating these questions - and we are in the process of eliciting answers by professional means.
We know that we have some very faithful viewers, "regulars" who come back year after year. It is equally gratifying that we enjoy the continued support of the Scandinavian and Baltic film institutes, directors, producers and distributors, for which we are most grateful. Certainly, the Nordic Film Days are a show place for Nordic films in Germany, and are probably the most important forum for Scandinavian films outside of Scandinavia itself. For the Hanse town Lübeck, they are the most significant regular cultural event.
American films - all well and good - but at our festival, what the viewers praise is the very different viewpoint reflected in the screenplays and camera shots, the study of people; of our neighbours in the north and the north-east. This involves many aspects: the particular aesthetic attraction of their films, the discovery of new talent, of unusual, disturbing phenomena as seen in the films of Lars von Trier or the Kaurismäki brothers. People appreciate our familiar but not too limiting atmosphere. Despite the increase in the numbers of viewers, our guests, the film professionals and the film fans are still able to get to know one another, beginning a personal cultural exchange.
Our continued aim is to present films of high quality within a suitable international framework. We thank all our visitors for their support. We should also like to thank our media partner NDR and our other sponsors, as well as the Friends of the Nordic Film Days, and - last but not least - the press.
In the name of all those who have worked towards the success of the Nordic Film Days, before and behind the screens, I wish our faithful fans, new viewers and guests from home and abroad many pleasant hours in the cinema and productive encounters with other enthusiasts.
