Noch ein Filmjahr? / Another typical film year?

"Der große Einsame" von Lennart Meri, dem Schriftsteller, Filmemacher und heutigen Präsidenten der Estnischen Republik, steht für den estnischen Film vor 30 Jahren. Oder anders gesagt: Der Film war ein Transplantat, künstlich auf das sowjetische Dekret gegründet, nicht in die estnische Kultur wirklich integriert. So war es viele Jahrzehnte.
Im März haben wir nach vielen Jahren eine Filmwoche organisiert, auf der alle unsere Filme des vergangenen Jahres gezeigt wurden. Die absolute Überraschung für uns: Der Kinosaal war völlig überfüllt. Und das bei der Statistik, dass der Este lediglich einmal pro Jahr ins Kino geht! Estnische Filme sind sonst schon etwas Zweitrangiges für die estnischen Zuschauer.
Der estnische Trickfilm ist erfolgreich wie früher bei den internationalen Filmfestivals. "Die Nacht der Mohrrüben" von Priit Pärn hat in Ottawa den Grand Prix gewonnen. Erfreulich, dass unsere jungen Trickfilmemacher Lorbeeren einheimsen: "Bermuda" von Ülo Pikkov hat in Ottawa den Jury's Special Prize bekommen, "Die Krähe und die Mäuse" von Mikk Rand und Priit Tender in Annecy einen Preis von FIPRESCI.
Bemerkenswert ist, dass im vergangenen Jahr auch unser Spielfilm den internationalen Durchbruch geschafft hat. "Georgica" von Sulev Keedus hat erfolgreich estnische Filmkunst auf mehreren Festivals repräsentiert.
1999 haben wir bis heute zwei Spielfilme produziert: eine Verfilmung eines estnischen Theaterstück, "The Highway Crossing" von Arko Okk, und "An Affair of Honour" von Valentin Kuik nach Motiven von Vladimir Nabokov.
Die Situation im Dokumentarfilmbereich ist nicht so erfreulich. Andererseits haben wir hier einen Film von Enn Säde, "Nelli und Elmar", der in Chicago den Silver Hugo gewonnen hat.
Wir müssen aber auch über die Filmstudenten sprechen. Eine Gruppe von Spielfilmregisseuren und Kameramännern ist bereits ausgebildet, jetzt sind die zukünftigen Dokumentarfilmer an der Reihe. Einige haben schon erste Erfolge aufzuweisen: "Came To Visit" von Jaak Kilmi hat im diesen Jahr in Oberhausen den Hauptpreis erhalten.
Sicherlich ist das Filmjahr 1999 für uns etwas besser als viele vorherige. Das Budget der Estonian Film Foundation beläuft sich auf rund 2,4 Millionen DM. Unsere Filmkunst baut heute auf ein gutes Potential. Aber werden wir das auch realisieren, was wir könnten? Das neue Millennium wird es zeigen.
 

"The Lonely Eminence" by Lennart Meri - the writer, film-maker and today President of the Republic of Estonia - is typical of Estonian cinema 30 years ago. Or to put it another way: the film was a transplant, artificially based upon a Soviet decree, not really integrated into Estonian culture. That was the way things were for many decades.
For the first time in many years, we organized a film week in March at which all our films from past years were shown. We were pleasantly surprised: the cinema was completely over-crowded. And that happened although statistics say that Estonians only go to the cinema once a year! Otherwise, Estonian viewers tend to consider Estonian films somewhat second rate.
As in the past, Estonian cartoon films have been successful at international festivals. "The Night of the Carrots" by Priit Pärn won the Grand Prix in Ottowa. We are delighted that our young cartoon film-makers are also collecting laurels: "Bermuda" by Ülo Pikkov won the Jury's Special Prize in Ottowa, "The Crow and the Mice" by Mikk Rand and Priit Tender received a prize from FIPRESCI in Annecy.
The remarkable thing is that in recent years our feature films have also achieved an international breakthrough. "Georgica" by Sulev Keedus has successfully represented Estonian film art at several festivals.
This year we have produced two feature films so far: the filming of an Estonian theatre play, "The Highway Crossing" by Arko Okk, and "An Affair of Honour" by Valentin Kuik, based on motifs from Vladimir Nabokov. The situation in our documentary section is not quite so pleasing. On the other hand, we do have a film by Enn Säde, "Nelli and Elmar", which won the Silver Hugo in Chicago.
We should also mention the Estonian film students. A group of feature film directors and cameramen is already qualified, now a group of future documentary film-makers is being trained. And indeed some graduates have already had their first successes: "Came to Visit" by Jaak Kilmi was awarded the main prize at Oberhausen this year.
This film year has certainly been better than many previous years. The budget of the Estonian Film Foundation amounts to 2,4 million DM. Today our cinematic art has considerable potential. But will we realise what is possible? It remains to be seen - in the new millennium.
