Eine neue Ära / A New Era

Der dänische Film bekommt mehr Geld. Politiker haben mit ihrer Entscheidung Mut und Handlungskraft bewiesen, denn der Medienbereich wird in Europa innerhalb der kommenden zehn Jahre um rund 70 Prozent wachsen. Dänemark darf von dieser Entwicklung nicht abgekoppelt werden. Vielmehr müssen wir Schritt halten. Durch die Erweiterung der EU wird Europa zum potentiell führenden audiovisuellen Markt der Erde. Und mit der ständig steigenden Nachfrage nach lebenden Bildern ist die audiovisuelle Industrie eine derjenigen, die - rein wirtschaftlich betrachtet - am meisten verspricht und folgerichtig neue Arbeitsplätze schaffen kann. Dieser neuen Zeit kann sich Dänemark mit Zuversicht stellen. Die dänische Filmindustrie ist bereits ein Wirtschaftszweig, der ausländisches Kapital anzieht. Mehr als ein Viertel der heutigen Spielfilmfinanzierungen kommt aus dem Ausland.
Es gibt gute und vernünftige Möglichkeiten, die Förderung der Projektentwicklung auszuweiten und so den Zug langsam ins Rollen zu bringen. Die Drehbuchentwicklung ist ein Bereich, in dem man mit relativ geringen Mitteln große Wirkungen für zukünftige Filmproduktionen erzielen kann. Bisher herrschte ein Mangel an guten Drehbüchern. Wir haben tüchtige Drehbuchautoren, aber wir haben ihnen schlechte Arbeitsbedingungen und wenig Zeit gegeben. Das Talent der Regisseure, die Phantasie der Kameraleute, herausragende Schauspieler und geniale Cutter können nichts ausrichten, wenn die Vorarbeit, also das Drehbuch, nicht durchdacht und professionell gemacht worden ist. Die neue Filmpolitik nimmt sich gezielt des Spielfilms an.
Aber Dänemark hat auch eine international anerkannte Tradition im Dokumentarfilmbereich. So laufen jede Woche Erfolgsnachrichten beim Filminstitut ein, dass dänische Dokumentarfilme bei ausländischen Festivals Preise gewonnen haben. Auch wegen seiner Kinderfilme ist Dänemark weltbekannt. Und auch dies ist ein Bereich, in dem Talent und Erfolg dazu ermuntern, ein vielfältigeres und verbessertes dänisches Angebot für die kleinen Großverbraucher zu entwickeln. Es ist ein besonderer Anspruch, phantasievolle Kinderfilme zu produzieren - als notwendige Ergänzung zur stereotypen Meterware. Das Filminstitut will aktiv daran mitwirken, intelligente Produktionen für Kinder, junge Leute und Erwachsene zu realisieren.
 

Danish film is to receive more money. The politicians' decision demonstrated courage and the strength to act - and social responsibility. For the media field in Europe is likely to grow by more than 70 per cent in the course of the next ten years. Denmark should not become detached from this development. On the contrary, it must keep pace with it. The extension of the European Union means that Europe has the potential to become a leading audio-visual market worldwide. And with the constantly increasing demand for living images, the audio-visual industry is one of those fields which - seen from a purely economic point of view - promises most, and consequently can create jobs. Now Denmark is able to face this new age with confidence. The film industry is already a field of commerce attracting foreign capital. Today, more than a quarter of financing for feature films comes from abroad.
There are good, sensible possibilities to extend the promotion of project development and so set things in motion. The area of screenplay, for example, is one in which it is possible to achieve a great deal for future film productions using relatively limited means. Up until now, there has been a lack of suitable screenplays. We have competent scriptwriters, but we have been offering them poor working conditions and too little time. The talent of the directors, the imagination of the cameramen, excellent actors and brilliant cutters can achieve nothing if the initial work - that is, the screenplay - has not been well planned and professionally carried out.
However, it is important to emphasise that the new film policy has been specifically conceived with feature films in mind. Denmark has an internationally recognised tradition in the field of documentary film, for example. Every week, news of successes arrive at the Film Institute, informing us that Danish documentary films have won prizes at international festivals. Denmark is also world famous for its children's films. This is another field in which talent and success encourage the development of a more varied, improved Danish supply for the mass consumers still in short pants. There is a real need to produce more imagin-ative children's films as a necessary supplement to the mass-produced stereotypes. The Film Institute is also anxious to actively participate in the realisation of intelligent productions for children, young people and adults.
