Dokumentarfilmpreis der IG-Metall - Begründung der Jury

Anläßlich der 41. Nordischen Filmtage Lübeck 1999 vergibt die Jury den mit 5.000 Mark dotierten Dokumentarfilmpreis der IG-Metall an:
 
GEBT UNS UNSERE SKELETTE!
 
IG Metall-Jury: Die Industriegewerkschaft Metall Lübeck-Wismar verleiht nun zum neunten Mal den Dokumentarfilmpreis der Nordischen Filmtage. Dies gesellschaftspolitische und kulturpolitische Engagement ist beispielhaft und verdient Dank, Anerkennung und Nachahmung. Die Jury hat für den Dokumentarfilmpreis 1999 der IG Metall den Film "Gebt uns unsere Skelette" ausgewählt. Es ist der Film des samischen Regisseurs Paul-Anders Simma, der ein Stück samischer Geschichte ins Licht der Öffentlichkeit rückt. Simma thematisiert den bis in die jüngste Zeit anhaltenden Kampf der Samen gegen ihre Unterdrückung und Ausgrenzung. Er zeigt Zusammenhänge zwischen der im ersten Drittel dieses Jahrhunderts wissenschaftlich und ideologisch formulierten und politisch exekutierten Rassentheorie mit dem Schicksal der Samen auf. Der Film nimmt Partei für die Samen, er provoziert. Die Jury hat lange diskutiert, ob sie sich Mißinterpretationen aussetzt angesichts der unvergleichbaren deutschen historischen Schuld, wenn sie einen Film auszeichnet, der Elemente der Rassenlehre in Skandinavien anprangert. Die Jury möchte mit ihrer Auszeichnung dazu beitragen, daß der Film eine größere Öffentlichkeit und eine breitere, durchaus auch kontroverse Diskussion erfährt. Denn er ist ein kämpferisches Plädoyer für das Miteinander von selbstbewußten Minderheiten in Nationalstaaten am Ende des Jahrtausends, das von der Ausrottung, Unterdrückung und Vertreibung von Minderheiten und Ethnien geprägt war, und weil wir uns mit dem Filmemacher wünschen, daß wir diese Barbarei im alten Jahrhundert zurücklassen können.

Documentary Film Prize of the IG-Metall - Statement of the Jury

On the occasion of the 41th Nordic Film Days Lübeck 1999 the Jury awards the Documentary Film Prize of the IG-Metall amounting to 5,000 marks to:

The Industrial Metalworkers Union Lübeck-Wismar is awarding a documentary film prize for the ninth time at the Nordic Film Days. The social and cultural commitment is exemplary and deserves thanks, recognition and emulation. For the 1999 Documentary Film Prize of the IG Metall the Jury has selected the film GIVE US OUR SKELETONS! It is a film by the Sami film director Paul-Anders Simma, who brings to public light a bit of Sami history. Simma's topic is the struggle of the Sami people against oppression and exclusion, which has continued on into our current times. He shows connections between the racial theory that was given scientic and ideological expression and political realization in the first third of this century and the fate of the Sami people. The film takes sides with the Sami people; it is provocative. The Jury discussed at leangth whether it would expose itself to misinterpretation in the face of the incomparable German historical guilt by awarding ist prize to a film that exposes element of racial theory in Scandinavia. Through this award the Jury would like to contribute to helping the film to find wider release and a deeper, decidely controversial discussion. It is a strident pladoyer for the coexistence of self-aware minorities in national states at the end of this millennium which was marked by the extinction, oppression and expulsion of minorities and ethic peoples, and we would like to wish together with the filmmaker that we can leave this barbarity behind in the old century.
