Inhalt/ Summary

Eine alte Frau fühlt den nahen Tod und sehnt sich nach ihrem Sohn. "Das ist ihr Lied, das Lied der Ma, der Mutter von But. Sie kann den Donner lesen und sie spricht mit ihm, und er spricht zu ihr wie ein König." Eine Brotfrucht fällt aus dem Himmel auf den schwarzen Strand. Und was für eine Brotfrucht! Gut zweieinhalb Meter hoch und anderthalb dick. Ein Riesenteil. But tapst schlafwarm aus seiner Hütte. "Mein Traum ist runtergefallen." But ist klar, daß nur Ma das "Früchtchen" geschickt haben kann und begibt sich mit seinem blinden Onkel, den beiden Cousinen, deren Söhnen und der schweren Himmelsfrucht auf den Weg. Von der Insel der Turteltauben, wo die Äquatorlinie verläuft, machen sie sich auf über die Meerenge zur Hauptinsel São Tomé, dem tropischen Eiland im atlantischen Ozean vor der Westküste Afrikas. Mit viel Musik und betörenden Bildern erzählt der dritte Film des Äquatorzyklus von Regisseur Herbert Brödl und Kameramann Volker Tittel von dieser abenteuerlichen Reise.

Feeling that death is near, an old woman longs for her son. "This is her song, Ma's song, But's mother. She can read the thunder and speak to it, and the thunder answers her like a king." A breadfruit tree falls to the black beach from the sky. And what a tree it is! Ten feet tall and five feet thick. A monster. Groggily, But stumbles from his hut. "My dream fell from the sky." But realizes that only his Ma could have sent the "li'l fruit," and sets off with his blind uncle, his two cousins and their sons as well as the heavy tree. From Love Bird Island, right on the equator, they cross the straits to São Tomé, the tropical island in the Atlantic off the west coast of Africa. The third film in the Equator cycle of director Herbert Brödl and cameraman Volker Tittel recounts this adventurous journey with lively music and powerful imagery.

Herbert Brödl, geboren 1949 in St. Pölten, Österreich, studierte Philosophie in Wien und war für das Österreichische Fernsehen (ORF) tätig. Seit 1974 lebt er als freier Autor und Regisseur in Hamburg, wo er 1982 die Produktionsfirma Bauhaus Film gründete und eine Vielzahl von Filmen realisierte. Volker Tittel, geboren 1957 in Itzehoe, arbeitet seit 1982 als freier Kameramann für Film und Fernsehen. Bereits dreimal wurde er mit dem Deutschen Kamerapreis ausgezeichnet.

Director Herbert Brödl, born in 1949 in St. Pölten, Austria, majored in philosophy at the University of Vienna before working for Austrian Broadcasting ORF. He has worked as freelance author and director in Hamburg since 1974, where he founded the production company Bauhaus Film in 1982, producing a number of films. Volker Tittel, born in 1957 in Itzehoe, has been a freelance cameraman for film and TV since 1982, and has won the German Camera Prize three times.
