Die Menschen hatten andere Sorgen: ein Dach über dem Kopf finden, Essen und Kleidung beschaffen. Heute aber erzählen sie rückblickend von ihrem Leben in jenen Jahren, von Gefangenschaft und Besatzung, Mut und dem Willen zum Überleben. Unterstützt von Archivmaterial entfaltet sich ein Bild des nördlichsten Bundeslandes, das von Not und Aufbau, allerlei politische Affären und dem Kampf gegen die Naturgewalten geprägt ist.
When British occupying forces proclaimed Schleswig-Holstein a German state on August 23, 1946, hardly anyone noticed. People had other concerns, such as finding a roof over their heads, food and clothing. Today, however, they look back on their lives in those years, telling of imprisonment and occupation, courage and the will to survive. With the help of archive material, the film paints a portrait of Germany's northernmost state, marked by hardship and rebuilding, a host of political cabals and the constant struggle with the forces of nature.
