Revolution in Rußland. Ein junger Mann von 20 Jahren meldet sich beim Moskauer Filmkomitee. Er will die Ereignisse der Revolution filmen. Der junge Mann heißt Dziga Vertov und wird einer der bedeutensten sowjetischen Filmpioniere: „Der Mann mit der Kamera". In militanten Manifesten proklamiert er seine Theorie des „Film-Auges", die ständige Bewegung, große Nähe und ungewöhnliche Kamerapositionen beinhaltet. Er begleitet die UdSSR von Lenins Revolution bis zu Stalins Tod. Seine Filme sind voller Euphorie. Einer heißt „Enthusiasmus", aber im Grunde könnten sie alle so heißen... Zugräder. Vertov hat den Zug geliebt. Auf dem Schienenstrang beginnen auch die Filmemacher ihre Expedition in Vertovs Moskau. Sie folgen seinen Spuren und Manifesten. Aus der Montage erhaltenen Filmmaterials und Gesprächen mit Vertov-Forschern und ehemaligen Weggefährten entsteht das Bild einer faszinierenden Künstlerpersönlichkeit in Zeiten des Umbruchs, aber auch ein Bild von den gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen im heutigen Moskau.
Revolution in Russia. A young man, aged 20, shows up at the Moscow Film Committee; he wants to film the events of the revolution. The young man is named Dziga Vertov, and he is to become one of the most important Soviet film pioneers: "The Man with the Camera". In militant manifestos, he proclaims his theory of the "Film Eye", which includes constant motion, close proximity to the subjects and unusual camera angles. He follows the course of Soviet events from Lenin's revolution to Stalin's death. His films are filled with euphoria; one of them is called "Enthusiasm", but in fact they could all bear this title. Wheels of trains: Vertov loved trains, and it was on the railway line that the filmmakers began their expedition into Vertov's Moscow, following in his footsteps, tracing his manifestos.
From a montage of extant film material and interviews with Vertov experts or old acquaintances, there emerges a portrait of a fascinating artist working in a time of upheaval; at the same time, a picture of the social changes in today's Moscow comes into focus.
