Goldfieber lockt brasilianische Desperados und Hungerleider in die Urwälder Amazoniens, wo sie träumerisch, rauschhaft und zu allem entschlossen ans Werk gehen auf der Suche nach dem gelben Schatz. Unter ihnen ein Indio, der Campari liebt und deshalb so genannt wird, und die Ex-Zirkusprinzessin India, die für die rauhen Kerle kocht und ihnen die Sterne deutet. Die beiden werden Freunde, und als Campari, der nicht im Urwald, sondern in seiner engen Hütte Gold entdeckt, bedroht wird, kann India mit knapper Not seine Haut retten. Gemeinsam schlagen sie sich durch ins nächstgrößere Kaff, wo India auftreten kann und Campari schicke Goldzähne bekommt. Aber auch dieses Glück ist nicht von Dauer, und schließlich winkt die Metropole São Paulo. „Goldland" ist eine faszinierende Mischung aus Dokumentation und Fiktion, Tragikomödie und modernem Märchen vom Mythos und vom Trugbild El Dorado – und nach „Jaguar und Regen", den wir 1994 zeigten, der zweite Film aus dem „Äquator-Zyklus" von Herbert Brödl und Kameramann Volker Tittel.
Gold fever draws Brazilian desperados and riffraff to the jungles of the Amazon, where, dreaming, obsessed and single-minded, they set to work hunting for treasure. Among them is an Indio who is nicknamed after his favourite drink, Campari, and the ex-circus princess India, who cooks for the rough treasure-hunters and tells their fortunes. The two of them become friends, and when Campari discovers gold, not in the jungle but in his own hut, and is threatened, India is just barely able to save his skin. Together, they fight through to the next settlement, where India is able to perform and Campari gets some new shiny gold teeth. But their happiness can't last, and they're ultimately drawn to the metropolis of Sao Paolo. "Gold Country" is a fascinating mixture of documentary and fiction, tragicomedy and a modern fairytale of the deceptive, alluring legend of El Dorado.
