Kristin ist die Tochter eines weithin bekannten Landbesitzers im norwegischen Gudbrandsdal im 13. Jahrhundert. Sie wächst in totaler Harmonie mit den Idealen ihrer Zeit auf: starke familiäre Bande, sozialer Stolz und gehorsame Christin. So akzeptiert sie auch, daß ihr Vater sie mit dem Sohn eines anderen Landbesitzers verheiraten will. Kristins Schönheit und Reinheit löst um sie herum gewalttätige Emotionen aus. Deshalb sucht sie Zuflucht in einem Kloster, um die Zeit bis zur Hochzeit zu überbrücken. Dort trifft sie auf Ritter Erlend Nikulaussønn – und beide verlieben sich ineinander. Aber es gilt für sie nicht nur die Klostermauern, sondern auch die sozialen Barrieren zu überwinden. Ihre Liebe bleibt nicht geheim, Kristin steht plötzlich im Mittelpunkt eines Skandals mit politischen Folgen. Liv Ullmann drehte ihren Film nach der Buchvorlage von Sigrid Undset, der norwegischen Nobelpreisträgerin. Damit wurde ein norwegischer Traum war. Mit „Kristin Lavransdatter“ setzt Liv Ullmann ihre Regiearbeit konsequent fort, die sie 1992 erfolgreich mit „Sofie“ begonnen hatte.
Kristin is the daughter of a prominent landowner in medieval Norway. She grows up in the Gudbrandsdal valley toward the beginning of the 14th century. She is in total harmony with the ideals of the times: strong family ties, social pride and Christian piety. She accepts the fact that her father has arranged for her to marry the son of another landowner. Kristin’s beauty and purity cause violent emotions to erupt in the men around her. She therefore seeks refuge in a convent, awaiting the time for her marriage. There she meets the knight Erlend Nikulaussønn – and they fall hopelessly in love. They have to cross not only convent walls to meet, but social boundaries as well. Their love cannot be kept a secret, and suddenly Kristin finds herself the centre of a scandal with political repercussions. Liv Ullmann has based her film on the well-known novel by Sigrid Undset, thus fulfilling a Norwegian dream. With “Kristin Lavransdatter“ the famous actress continues her directorial career, which she began in 1992 with her successful début “Sofie“.
