New York lag für die Bewohner der nordfriesischen Inseln Amrum und Föhr jahrzehntelang näher als Hamburg. Zeitweise zog es alle männlichen Schulabgänger eines Jahrganges dorthin. Die jungen Männer wurden von Verwandten aufgenommen, „bekamen eine Schürze umgebunden“ und waren von da an im Delikatessenhandel tätig – vorwiegend in Manhatten und in der Bronx. In den 50er Jahren versiegte der Auswandererstrom. Auch die sozialen Strukturen in der Bronx änderten sich, und die New Yorker Friesen zogen weiter in die nördlichen Vororte und auf Long Island. Der Film zeichnet die Stationen der Auswanderung nach und begleitet einige Nordfriesen durch ihren New Yorker Alltag. Volkert Schult, geboren 1957 in Norddorf auf Amrum, ist Absolvent der Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg und seither als Autor und Regisseur von Industrie- und Werbefilmen sowie fürs Fernsehen tätig.
For many decades, New York appeared nearer to the inhabitants of the North Friesian Islands Amrun and Föhr than Hamburg. There were times when all of the boys graduating in a particular school year emigrated to America. The young men were taken in by relatives, “had an apron wrapped around them“ and began working in the delicatessen trade, mostly in Manhattan and the Bronx. In the 1950s the stream of emigrants began to die off. The social structures in the Bronx also changed and the New York Friesians moved to the suburbs north of New York and on Long Island. The film charts the stations of emigration and accompanies some North Frisians through their daily life in New York. Volker Schult, born in 1957 in Norddorf on Amrun, studied at the school of fine arts in Hamburg and has since worked as a writer/director for commercials and industrial films as well as for television.
